It might have been a week, perhaps, after the last incident recorded, when we were awakened to a perfect sense of existence by the cheerful voice of Augustus.
마지막 사건이 기록된 이후, 아마 일주일쯤 지났을 무렵, 우리는 어거스터스의 쾌활한 목소리에 의해 비로소 생존의 감각을 완전히 되찾게 되었다.
We had now the full use of our reason, and health, with the exception of extreme weakness, seemed entirely restored.
우리는 이제 완전히 이성을 되찾았고, 극도의 허약함을 제외하면 건강도 거의 완전히 회복된 상태였다.
Upon endeavoring to converse with Augustus, we were grieved and astonished to find that he was afflicted with a severe illness, accompanied with acute delirium.
하지만 어거스터스와 대화를 시도했을 때, 우리는 그가 극심한 섬망 증세를 동반한 중병에 걸려 있다는 사실에, 깊은 슬픔과 충격을 받았다.
His illness appeared to be a virulent typhus, and he died in a few days afterward, a prey to the most horrible sufferings.

His death filled us with despair, and we lamented him long.

It was not until several weeks after this melancholy event that we were able to speak with anything like hope of the future.

It was during this interval of despondency that we busied ourselves in examining the state of the atmosphere and in making what little preparation was in our power for a renewal of the voyage.

Our situation, however, was somewhat different from what it had been, for the atmosphere now gave evidence of a radical change in its condition.

We had left the region of ice far behind us; and the temperature of the water, as well as of the air, was milder than at any period since our departure from the Pole itself.

The heat of the water was particularly noticeable, and in its color and appearance there was a remarkable change.
물의 온도는 특히 눈에 띄게 따뜻했고, 그 색깔과 외양에도 눈에 띄는 변화가 있었다.
Being of a milky hue and occasionally exhibiting an appearance as of gentle ebullition.
