단편#2 - The Shepherd Boy
지혜로운 목동 이야기
다음으로 가져온 이야기는, 지혜로운 목동 아이 이야기다.
말 한 마디로 천 냥 빚 갚는다는 말을 잘 나타낸 일화라고 할 수 있겠다. 어릴 때는 이런 이야기들을 그저 동화 속의 이야기로 치부했는데, 살다 보니 동화 속의 지혜가 일상 속에서 빛을 발할 때가 많다는 사실을 깨닫기도 한다.
물론 동화 속의 이야기를 진지하게 받아들인다 해도 내 말솜씨가 크게 느는 것은 아니다. 그러나 어린 시절부터 말의 중요성을 느낄 수 있게 해주는 재밌는 이야기인듯 하여 가져와 보았다.
이야기는 현대어로 이해하기 쉽게 바꾸었다. 또한 각 문답마다 왜 왕이 기뻐했는지에 대한 설명이 부족한듯 하여 설명도 추가해 보았다.
특히 마음에 드는 부분은, 마지막 "then one second of eternity will have passed.” 라는 부분이다. will + have + p.p (요즘은 이렇게 안 가르치는지 모르겠지만) 의 개념을 익히기 괜찮은 문장인듯 하다. 특히 어릴때는 시간을 표현함에 있어 어려움이 있을텐데, 다양한 시제를 조금씩 익힐 수 있어 더욱 좋은 이야기라고 생각된다.
이해를 돕기 위해 삽화를 추가하였다.
The Wise Shepherd Boy
Once upon a time, there was a young shepherd boy who lived in the hills. He was poor, but everyone knew he was very smart and gave thoughtful answers.
One day, the king heard about him and wanted to test the boy himself.
The king said, “If you can answer three questions I ask, I will treat you like my own child. You can live in the royal palace.”
The boy bowed and said, “What are the three questions, Your Majesty?”
First Question
The King asked, “How many drops of water are in the ocean?”
The boy replied, “My king, if you stop all the rivers from flowing into the sea, and let me count every drop already there, then I will tell you how many drops are in the ocean.”
Why this is wise? He didn’t say a random number. He showed that it’s impossible to count because new water keeps flowing in all the time. He used smart thinking to show the question can’t really be answered.
Second Question
The king asked, “How many stars are in the sky?”
The boy asked for a big white paper. He made many tiny dots—so small and so many, no one could count them. Then he said, “There are as many stars as there are dots on this paper. You can count them if you like.”
Why this is wise? Instead of saying “too many” or giving a number, he gave a clever example—something people could see, but still couldn’t count. It helped them feel how big the sky really is.
Third Question
The king asked, “How many seconds are there in eternity?”
The boy smiled and said, “Far away, in a land called Lower Narnia, there is a mountain made of diamond. It is two miles high, two miles wide, and two miles deep. Every hundred years, a tiny bird comes to sharpen its beak on the mountain. When that bird has worn the whole mountain down to nothing— then one second of eternity will have passed.”
Why this is wise? He used imagination to describe something endless. The story shows that eternity is so long we can’t even understand it. He didn’t just say “forever”—he painted a picture that helps us feel how big and endless eternity really is.
The king was amazed. “You are wise,” he said. “Wiser than many grown men I know.”
And from that day on, the shepherd boy lived in the palace, never poor or alone again.
1) 참 영어 배우기 좋은 세상이다.
2) 옛날 동화들이 주는 재미와 교훈이 확실히 있다. AI 로 "처음부터 지어낸 이야기"에서 느낄 수 없는 1%의 뭔가가 있다. 표현이 적절한 지는 모르겠으나, 사람이 지어낸 이야기가 갖는 힘이라고 할까. 언젠가 이마저도 정복당한다면 조금 슬플것 같긴 하다.
3) 어릴 때라면 목동이 참 현명하다고 생각했을텐데, 회사생활을 하다 보니 '아무리 그래도 왕 앞인데 저렇게 대답하면 큰일나지...' 하는 생각.
