단편#15 - 토토의 정원
성공하는 사람들의 7가지 습관
이사하고 가전 집어넣고 하느라 그동안 정신이 없었다.
아직 인터넷이 들어오지 않아서, 근처에 인터넷이 되는 쾌적한 카페로 나왔다.
오늘은 간만에 고전이다. 성공하는 사람들의 7가지 습관의 내용을 담아 동화를 만들어 보았다.
어릴적 집 책상 한켠에 항상 꽂혀있던 내용이었는데, 시간이 오래 흘러 읽었다는 사실조차 잊어버렸다.
챗지피티의 힘을 빌어, 핵심 내용을 보고 간추려 봤는데 이게 이런 내용이었나 싶다.
성공하기 위한 일곱가지 습관은 아래와 같다고 한다.
1. 주도성 : 저자는 자극과 반응 사이에는 개인이 어떻게 반응할지 선택하는 능력이 있다고 강조하며 자신의 영향력 안에 있는 일(원 중심)을 인식하고 책임감 있게 행동하는 것이 중요하다고 설명한다.
2. 목표를 먼저 그리기 – 그는 미래에 원하는 모습을 마음속으로 먼저 창조하고 개인적인 목표선언서를 통해 삶의 방향을 정해야 한다고 말한다. 모든 것은 두 번 만들어지며, 행동하기 전에 머릿속으로 먼저 계획해 보라고 제안한다.
3. 우선순위 정하기 – 저자는 중요한 일과 긴급한 일을 구분하는 시간관리 매트릭스를 소개하고 가장 중요한 일에 시간을 투자하며 말과 행동의 일치를 유지해야 한다고 강조한다.
4. 윈윈 사고 – 인간관계에서 모두가 이기는 해결책을 찾는 것이 장기적으로 더 나은 결과를 낳으며, 이는 단순한 ‘착한 행동’이 아니라 인간관계를 위한 성품에 기반한다.
5. 먼저 이해하고, 그 다음 이해시키기 – 공감적 경청을 통해 다른 사람을 진정으로 이해하면 상대방도 열린 마음으로 귀를 기울이게 되고, 문제해결의 분위기가 만들어진다고 설명한다.
6. 시너지 – 사람들의 강점을 긍정적인 협력으로 결합하면 혼자서는 불가능한 목표도 달성할 수 있다고 강조한다.
7. 자기 쇄신 – 그는 장기적인 지속 가능한 삶을 위해 자원을 균형 있게 재충전해야 하며, 운동과 독서, 봉사 등을 통해 몸과 마음을 새롭게 하라고 말한다.
베스트셀러로 오랫동안 사랑받아온 데는 이유가 있다. 약간의 냉소를 더해서, 너무나 당연한 말을 좋은 구성으로 제공하기 때문에. 그러나 책이든 음식이든 음악이든 많은 사람들에게 어필하는 부분이 많을수록 잘 팔리는 것 아니겠는가. 당연한 얘기이지만 그 기본조차 들어가 있지 않은 책들도 있고, 백날천날 자기계발서를 읽는 나 자신도 이중에 지키는 것이 그리 많지 않기 떄문에 뭐라할 수가 없다.
그래서 다시 긍정적인 마인드로 책의 내용을 통해 나 자신의 삶을 반성하자면,
중요한 일에 시간을 투자하지 않은 것 (가족과 즐거운 시간을 보내는것보다 쇼츠로 허비하는 시간이 많은 것)
독서를 소홀히 하고(역시나 쇼츠...), 봉사활동에는 시간을 쏟지 않은 것이다.
하지만 이미 성공하기에는 늦은 시기이니, 우리 자녀들만큼은 성공하기를 바라는 마음에서 아래와 같이 동화를 준비해 보았다. 협업, 윈윈전략 등이 아름답게 녹아있는 영어동화다.
Toto and Lila’s Garden
Once upon a time, in a sunny forest clearing, there lived a cheerful blue bunny named Toto. One day, he met a curious red fox named Lila.
“Hi there! I’m Toto,” said the bunny.
“I’m Lila! Want to play?” the fox replied with a grin.
They became fast friends and dreamed of making the forest a happier place.
One morning, they saw a big pile of sticks blocking the path.
“Oh no,” Lila frowned. “We can’t walk past this.”
Toto looked at the pile and nodded.
“Let’s clean it up! We can do it together.”
And so, they worked side by side. Toto pushed the sticks away with his paws, and Lila carried them into the bushes.
They laughed as they worked, and when they were done, the path was clear again.
“Being helpful feels good,” said Lila.
“Yep! We didn’t wait for someone else—we did it ourselves!” Toto beamed.
Later that day, they sat by a sparkling stream and started dreaming again.
“Wouldn’t it be amazing to have our own garden?” Lila said.
Toto’s eyes sparkled. “With flowers, and tomatoes, and maybe even a little fountain!”
They drew their ideas in the sand, sketching flowers, rows of vegetables, and a tiny fountain in the middle.
“Let’s begin with the end in mind,” Toto said wisely. “If we know what we want, we can make a plan!”
They wrote down the important steps:
Gather seeds
Dig holes
Water the plants
While collecting seeds, they met a brown squirrel with puffy cheeks.
“Hey! Those are my nuts!” the squirrel said, frowning.
Toto stepped back and said kindly, “We’re not trying to take them all.”
Lila added, “There’s enough for all of us. We can even plant more nut trees!”
The squirrel blinked. “Really? You’d do that?”
“Of course,” Toto smiled. “We believe in sharing.”
They all nodded and began planting together.
The next day, while resting under a shady tree, they met a wise green turtle named Missy.
“Hello, little ones,” Missy said gently. “If you want to be good friends and helpers, always listen first.”
Toto tilted his head. “You mean… really listen?”
“Yes,” said Missy. “Not just with your ears, but with your heart too.”
Toto and Lila nodded. They sat quietly, listening to Missy’s stories about kindness, patience, and how plants grow strong roots—just like friendships.
Soon it was time to build the garden.
“I’ll dig the holes!” said Toto.
“And I’ll plant the seeds!” said Lila.
They worked together, helping each other with each task. Day by day, little green sprouts popped up.
When they were tired, they rested under their favorite tree, reading storybooks and munching on crunchy apples and carrots.
“Resting is important too,” said Lila with a yawn.
“And reading helps our minds grow,” Toto added.
Weeks passed, and their garden bloomed with bright tulips, big tomatoes, golden sunflowers, and the tiniest stone fountain in the middle.
Toto and Lila stood side by side, paws together.
“We did it,” whispered Toto.
“Yes,” Lila said, eyes shining. “Together.”
As the sun began to set, fireflies flickered to life.
Toto giggled. “Let’s dance!”
Lila laughed, “Let’s celebrate!”
So under the orange sky and twinkling fireflies, they danced in the garden they had built together—with kindness, teamwork, and a lot of love.
And from that day on, the garden was a place where all animals came to share, rest, and dream.
