It is um. We are at the stage where um we have been quietly training, teaching you Chan meditation And it’s amazing to me how you are able to come here. Since its access is not that good. ok. and then not only you are able to come and also able to stay. So many more people can benefit so greatly from Chan meditation. Yet they are unable to come. So we hope that we are preparing to open second way place. (찻잔 놓는 소리) (마스터) Thank you. So we are preparing second way place where the access is slightly better and we are able to accommodate more people. Now really try to share more the Dharma with more people.

우리는 조용히 여러분에게 챤 명상을 훈련시키고 가르쳐오는 단계에 있습니다. 여러분이 여기까지 올 수 있다는 게 내겐 놀라운 일입니다. 여기 접근성은 그닥 좋지 않습니다. 오케이. 그리고 여러분이 여기 올 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 머물 수도 있습니다. 그래서 더욱 많은 사람들이 챤 명상으로부터 크나큰 이익을 얻을 수 있습니다. 하지만 그들은 오지 못합니다. 그래서 우리는 두 번째 도량을 여는 걸 준비하길 바랍니다. It turns out that the Buddha predicted already. It’s very very difficult encounter the Buddha Dharma, especially Mahayana Dharma. Because this is called the era of the Dharma ending age. Very few people are able to encounter the Dharma that will help them end suffering and attain bliss, ok, and get out of this scary thing called reincarnation wheel. The reason you are not scared of it is because you’ve been revolving in the wheel for so long. Buddhism has a concept of called beginningless time. No one knows when it all began. Since beginning of time we’ve been revolving the wheel. Only through Buddha Dharma that we are able to get out. ok, so far so good. And most people are not aware of that. People think it’s about Buddhism. It’s not a thing about, it’s not about Buddhism at all. You can care less, if you are non-Buddhist. Catholic, Jewish, whatever as long as you are able to get out of the wheel, that’s fine. Then our work is worthwhile. alright.

부처님께서 이미 예지한 것으로 드러났습니다. 불법, 특히 대승법을 만나기란 매우 매우 어렵습니다. 왜냐하면 말법시대이기 때문입니다. 아주 적은 수의 사람들만이 고통을 끝내고 안락을 얻고 윤회바퀴라는 이 무서운 것에서부터 나오게 돕는 법을 만날 수 있습니다. 오케이.

But in general, there’s a thing that the Buddha called 8 difficulties. The difficulty is meaning that 8 things that make it very difficult to encounter the Buddha Dharma. And you see those, you go through those 8 difficulties, you see why it is difficult to meet, to encounter the Buddha Dharma. So the first one is the hells. ok. Some people may not believe in the hells. The hells are physically underneath our world. You open your spiritual eyes, you see the hells. The heavenly eye. You see the hell underneath us directly. It’s a place where being’s tortured. There are all kinds of torture instruments. So the suffering down the hells are incredible. And if you like, commit serious offenses, Then you go to the worst kind of hells. It’s called avici hell or unintermit hell. What does it mean, unintermittent? It means that the pain and torture are non stop. alright.

하지만 일반적으로 부처님께서 여덟가지 어려움이라고 부른 것이 있습니다. 어려움이란 불법을 만나기 매우 어렵게 만드는 것을 의미합니다. 그, 여덟 가지 어려움을 거치면 왜 불법을 만나기 어려운 지 볼 수 있습니다. 그래서 처음은 지옥입니다. 오케이. 어떤 이들은 지옥을 믿지 않을 수도 있습니다. 지옥은 물리적으로 우리 세계의 아래에 있습니다. 여러분이 영안을 열면 지옥을 봅니다. 천압 말입니다. 여러분은 아래 지옥에 있는 우리를 직접 봅니다. 거긴 고문 당하는 곳입니다. 모든 종류의 고문 기구들이 있습니다. 그 아래 지옥의 고통을 믿기 힘듭니다. 여러분이 심각한 죄를 저지른다면, 여러분은 최악의 종류의 지옥에 갑니다. 그건 무간지옥이라고 불립니다. 무간이란 무슨 뜻입니까? 그건 그 고통과 고문이 멈추지 않는단 걸 뜻합니다. 알겠습니까.

I once went to prison to visit someone a few years ago, several years ago. I went there it was my very first time. You walk in there, you sense all this energy that is so much pain and suffering in there. So much anger, so much suffering. Alright, you sense that when you go there, ok. So that’s hell on earth.

누군가를 만나러 몇 년 전, 수년 전에 한 번 감옥에 갔었습니다. 내가 그 곳에 가 본 건 처음이었습니다. 그곳에 걸어 들어가면, 그곳에 아픔과 괴로움이 많다는 걸, 이 모든 기운을 감지합니다. 많은 화와 괴로움이 있습니다. 그렇습니다. 여러분이 그곳에 가면 감지합니다. 오케이. 그러니 그곳이 지상의 지옥입니다.

But hell down there is just so much suffering that you certainly don’t want to go to down there. Because you will be down there for millions upon millions of kalpas. receiving torture. And that’s why in Buddhism, the Buddha Dharma, one of the first you learn Buddha Dharma is to avoid creating conditions for you to fall to the hells. so far so good, any questions?

하지만 거기 아래 지옥은 너무도 괴로워서 확실히 여러분은 그 아래로 가고 싶지 않아 합니다. 왜냐하면 여러분이 그곳에서 수백만년에 수백만년 겁 동안을 고문을 받으며 있을 것이기 때문입니다. 그래서 불교에서, 불법에서 여러분이 불버에서 가장 먼저 배우는 것 중 하나는 여러분이 지옥으로 떨어질 연을 만드는 것을 피하라는 겁니다. 지금까지 괜찮습니까? 질문 있습니까?

How easier to fall to the hells? For instance, we monks and nuns are creating offenses left and right everyday to fall to the hells. Ok? Would you like to know, some of a few things? If you get angry. Anyone gets angry at all during a day? I do. When you have children, you know what anger is about. It’s necessary to get angry. (laugh) If you get angry, you plant the seeds to fall to the hells. It’s that simple. Ok? If you are angry, someone will cut you off freeway. That’s you plant the seeds to fall to the hells. Ok? And we have, in Buddhism something called precepts. If you violate these rules of morality, you fall to the hells. OK, so for monks like me, everyday, we have 250 rules of precepts. We have 250 different ways to fall to the hells everyday. Ok? If you wear the clothes the wrong way, will fall to the hells. Everytime we wear the cloth. I can’t tell you details. But there’s rules that are incredible. And you say that’s us left home people.

지옥에 떨어지기란 얼마나 쉽습니까? 예를 들어, 우리 비구 비구니들이 매일매일 지옥에 떨어지는 죄들을 이리저리 짓고 있습니다. 오케이? 몇 가지 것들을 알고 싶습니까, 여러분? 여러분이 화를 내면 말입니다. 누구 하루 동안 화 난 사람 있습니까? 난 화 났습니다. 여러분에게 아이가 있다면, 화란 무엇인지 알겁니다. 화 나는 건 필수입니다. What about you? You, too. You are not spare from that. For example, the lay people have the five rules of morality. If you violate these five rules of morality. then you create the seeds to fall to the hells. Ok? Some people say, a lot of people say in that case, I don’t want to take precepts. Then I’m not intereseted in, it only makes me go to the hells. A lot of people are very smart. They don’t take precepts. Do they fall to the hells? Yes, they do.

여러분은 어떻습니까? 여러분도 마찬가집니다. 여러분도 여기서부터 안전하지 않습니다. 예를들어, 재가인들에겐 다섯 가지 도덕 규칙이 있습니다. 여러분이 이 다섯 도덕 규칙을 어긴다면, 지옥에 떨어질 씨앗을 만드는 겁니다. 오케이? 어떤 사람들은, 이런 경우에 많은 사람들이 계율을 받고 싶지 않아, 그럼 난 흥미 없어, 단지 날 지옥에 떨어지게 만들다니, 라고 말합니다. 많은 사람들이 매우 똑똑합니다. 그들은 계율을 받지 않습니다. 그들이 지옥에 떨어집니까? 네, 지옥에 떨어집니다.

This is about plating the seeds. You create the reason, the seeds to fall to the hells, you will. So the seeds are the violations of these rules of morality. So for exmaple, we are not supposed to kill. So if you kill another being, for whatever the reason. Whether self defense, or maybe an abortion, if you kill a living being, then you fall to the hells. If you are able to, if you have some skills, you are able to kill the gods, you fall to the hells. Alright? So it’s killing, yes ma’am.

이건 씨를 심는 것에 관한 겁니다. 여러분이 지옥에 떨어질 이유, 씨앗을 만들면 지옥에 떨어질 겁니다. 그러니 그 씨앗이란 이 도덕 규칙들을 위반하는 겁니다. 그러니 예를 들어, 우린느 살생을 하면 안됩니다. 그런데 만약 여러분이 이유가 무엇이건 다른 존재를 죽였습니다. 자기 방어 건 낙태건 간에 여러분이 어떤 중생을 죽인다면 여러분은 지옥으로 떨어집니다. 여러분이 할 수 있다면, 여러분이 어떤 기술이 있다면 여러분은 신을 죽일 수 있습니다. 여러분은 지옥으로 떨어집니다. 알겠습니까? 그러니 살생입니다. 네, 여자분.

Killing a ghost or demon? Oh, that’s exempt. They deserve to be killed. No? You disagree? You disagree with master? (laugh) You fall to the hells! (laugh) By the way, if masters explains the way wrong Dharma, I’ll be, fall to the animal realm. Did you know that? That’s why most monks and nuns don’t like to speak Dharma. There are just so many ways. Anyway, so you kill the ghosts and demons, you fall to the hells. Most likely, not. Why? Because it’s not as severe as killing humans and killing the gods, the heavenly beings. It turns out you kill the demon, you fall to the hells. Why is that? Because the demons are actually heavenly beings up there, the sixth desire heaven. So you don’t want to kill the demons. Alright? Does it answer your questions? Ok.

귀신 혹은 마구니를 죽이는 것 말입니까? 오, 그건 예외입니다. 그들은 죽어 마땅합니다. 아닙니까? 반대합니까? 당신, 마스터에게 반대합니까? (웃음) 당신은 지옥으로 떨어집니다! On the other hand, why would you want to kill at all? There’s no need to kill. When you kill, you create a killing karma. Meaning that in the future they will come and kill you. No 2 ways about it. Ok? Questions. So you fall to the hells, because many of reasons. Rather easy reasons for you to fall to the hells. So you don’t want to kill, you don’t want to steal, Ok? The more you steal, the bigger trouble you get down the road. You don’t want to have deviant sex.

반면에, 도대체 왜 죽이고 싶어합니까? 죽일 필요 없습니다. 여러분이 죽이면, 살생업을 짓는 겁니다. 나중에 그들이 와서 여러분을 죽일 거란 걸 의미합니다. 다른 길은 없습니다. 오케이?질문 있습니까?그러니 여러분이 지옥에 떨어지는 건 많은 이유가 있기 때문입니다. 여러분이 지옥에 떨어지는데 더욱 쉬운 이유들이 있습니다. 그러니 여러분은 죽이고, 훔치고 싶지 않아합니다. 오케이? 여러분이 더 많이 훔칠수록 여러분이 더 많은 문제를 겪을 겁니다. 여러분은 사음하고 싶어 하지 않습니다.

And you don’t want to commit offenses, lying offenses. And particular claiming that you see the hells, yet you can’t really see the hells. Ok. You fall to the hells. Or you say on the other hand, if you are able to see the hells, you say no I can’t see the hells. You still fall to the hells. You still will fall. Even jokingly. you will still fall to the hells. Yes.

그리고 여러분은 죄, 거짓말하는 죄를 저지르고 싶어하지 않습니다. 그리고 특히 여러분이 지옥을 정말로 볼 수 없는데 지옥을 본다고 주장하는 것 말입니다. 오케이. 여러분은 지옥에 떨어집니다. 혹은 반면에 여러분이 지옥을 볼 수 있는데도 지옥을 볼 수 없다고 말합니다. 여전히 여러분은 지옥에 떨어집니다. 여전히 떨어질 겁니다. 농담으로라도 여러분은 지옥에 떨어질 겁니다. 그렇습니다.

(inaudible) Yes. A lot of people are actually they go and they see themselves going to the hells and travel to the hells and see a lot of monks and nuns. I hear very often. I don’t know why they keep on telling me those dreams. And so I asked this particualr woman, she said I see it, I go down there, I sleep and go down there and I saw so many these monks. I said, you see me? (laugh) This is my master’s disciple. Long long time ago. Her master certified that she could see the hells. And she wouldn’t tell me.

(안 들림) 그렇습니다. 많은 사람들이 사실 가서 직접 지옥에 가고, 지옥으로 여행을 가서 많은 비구 비구니들을 봅니다. 난 매우 자주 듣습니다. 왜 살마들이 계속해서 내게 그런 꿈들을 말해주는지 모르겠습니다. 그래서 나는 이 어따ᅠ간 여자분에게 물었습니다. 그녀는, 난 봤어요, 거기 아래 내려가서, 잠들어서 아래 내려가서 아주 많은 이 비구들을 봤어요 라고 말했습니다. 난, 당신 날 봤습니까? 라고 말했습니다. The second difficulty is the hungry ghost. Hungry ghosts are the yin beings. And they are depending on their severity on their offenses. Regardless they undergo a lot of suffering of thirst and hunger. They are constantly harassed, tormented by hunger and thirst. Alright? And how you become, how do you fall to the hungry ghost? Because of something you probably don’t apply to you, it’s called greed. If you are greedy, you plant the seeds to fall to the hells. Ok? Alright?

두 번째 어려움은 아귀입니다. 아귀들은 음의 존재들입니다. 그들은 죄에 따라 심각성이 달려있습니다. 그와 관계없이 그들은 갈증과 배고픔으로 많은 고통을 겪습니다. 그들은 배고픔과 갈증에 의해 계속해서 괴롭혀지고 고문 당합니다. 알겠습니까? 그러면 여러분이 어떻게 해서 아귀가 됩니까, 아귀로 떨어집니까? 여러분이 본인에게 해당된다고 보지 않을, 탐욕이라 불리는 것 때문입니다. 여러분이 탐욕스럽다면 지옥?(아귀를 잘못 말하신 것 같음)에 떨어지는 씨앗을 심는 겁니다. 오케이? 알겠습니까?

And the third difficulty is the animal realms. Animal realms. Once you fall to the animal realms, it’s very very difficult to get out. For example, one of the most eminent disciples of the Buddha is Venerable Shariputra. He’s number 1 in wisdom. He was helping one of the Dharma protector, donor of the Buddha takes measurement on a piece of plan they offer to the Buddha, they built an monastery. And he’s working. All of sudden, the donor looked at Shariputta. Shariputta was actually having tears in his eyes. So he asked him. Venerable Shariputta, why are you tearing up? And Shariputta said you see the ants? right here. He said, yes. He said, these ants here have been ants, have been here since countless countless kalpas. They cannot get out of being an ant, state of an ant. So once you become an ant, you die, you continue to become an ant. It’s very difficult to get out of animal realm. Ok? Any questions?

Yes, Brady. (Inaudible) Is there a way to remove all these things? Uh, yeah. But we don’t teach you those because it’s paying session. (laugh) Mara? Mara didn’t reach enlightment. He became an 1st state arhat because Buddha taught him. King Mara, Mara is the demon king. Pretty good. Brady said that he read that King Mara came and tried to kill the Buddha and the Buddha said, spoke Dharma to him, taught him and through speaking of Dharma to him. King Mara certified to 1st stage arhatship. He hasn't became an enlightened. Not in Mahayana perspective. So he continue to be a demon king. Ok?

And she sees people suffering from the hells. She goes down there to try to rescue them. Alright? Of course, that’s what they try to do everyday. Why are still so many living beings in hells? All you have to do, you in the hells, all you have to do is have a strike of thoughts of goodness. A good thought. That’s all. Instaneously, boom! You get out. It ain’t cool? Now you know. Yes? Well. But. When you are in hells your mind is so clouded that you are in constantly in pain. Ok. For example, when your arms are cut off, can you think anything but pain right here? Is that right? Exact same thing in hells. You are in such great pains, 24 hours a day. It’s not possible for you to even strike up a thought of goodness. That’s how painful it is.

두 번째는 훨씬 빠릅니다. 여러분, 알고 싶습니까? 확실합니까? 필요한 건 이게 답니다. 아주 쉽습니다. 그래서 여러분, 그게 꽤 가치가 있습니다. For example. In the evening ceremony, there’s a section while we feed hungry ghosts. To relieve their pain, or thirst, hunger. Every single night we do that at the temples. Alright? And so the section we recite NamoDaBangGuanFoHwaYinJing. And we take refuge with the Avatamsaka Sutra. We recite it 3 times. Ok. You do it 3 times. If they are able to even do that, you get out immediately. If you are able to just simply say please repeat after me. You go to the hells, Guan Yin would help. She says repeat after me. NamoDaBangGuanFoHwaYinJing. Just repeat after me. You cannot even repeat after it. That’s how dark and confused your mind is. So even though you know all it takes is a strike up of good thoughts, you can’t even do that. That’s how difficult it is. Questions. Yes.

예를 들어, 저녁 예불에서 우리가 아귀들에게 먹을 것을 주는 부분이 있습니다. 그들의 아픔 혹은 갈증, 배고픔을 덜어주기 위해서 말입니다. 매일밤 우리는 절에서 그걸 합니다. 알겠습니까? 그래서 그 부분에서 우리는 나무대방광불화엄경을 욉니다. 화엄경에 귀의합니다. 세 번 욉니다. 오케이. 여러분, 세 번 합니다. 만약 그들이 그걸 할 수 있다면 즉시 나갑니다. 여러분이 그냥 단순하게, 날 따라 말하십시오, 라고 할 수 있다면 말입니다. 여러분이 지옥에 갑니다. 관음보살님께서 돕고 싶어하십니다. 날 따라해라, 나무대방광불화엄경, 그냥 날 따라해, 라고 말하십니다. 여러분은 그걸 따라하는 것조차도 할 수 없습니다. 그만큼 여러분의 마음이 어둡고 혼란스럽습니다. 그러니 여러분이 필요한 건 단지 선한 생각 한 번 떠올리는 것이 다란 걸 알아도 할 수 조차 없습니다. 그만큼 그게 어렵습니다. 질문. 네.

(inaudible) That, too. Or if you recite anything, any of Buddhas name, the sutra’s name Bodhisattvas name. Instant liberation. Instantaneously. And yet, you can’t. Alright? So those are the 3 lower realms, the evil paths very very very easy to fall and very hard to get out. Once you get down there, you are unable to encounter the Buddha Dharma and see the Buddhas. Alright?

(안 들림) 그것도 마찬가집니다. 혹은 여러분이 어떤 것, 어느 부처님 명호, 경전의 이름, 보살님의 명호를 외무녀 즉시 해방됩니다. 즉시 말입니다. 하지만 여러분은 할 수 없습니다. 알겠습니까? 그래서 그 낮은 세 가지 법계, 삼악도는 매우 매우 매우 떨어지기 쉽고 빠져 나오기 매우 어렵습니다. 일단 여러분이 그 아래로 가면, 불법을 만나고 부처님을 뵐 수 없습니다. 알겠습니까?

Another difficulty, number 4 is to be born in the long life heaven, no thought heaven. The non Buddhists, the externalists, they practice meditation. Many of them, after they die, they are reborn to the 4th Dhyana heaven. And what’s so bad about it? Because when you then live for five hundred great kalpa, ok? You know how long that could be? 640 billion years, earth years. And they are there for 640 billion years without being able to do anything. So you are basically in prison up there for 640 billion years. Ok? So once at the end of life, they fall. They fall straight to the hells. Alright? So it’s a difficulty because you cannot afford 640 billion years, you are not able to encounter the Buddha Dharma. And you fall after you are done.

또 다른 어려움, 네 번째는 장수 천상, 무념천에 태어나는 겁니다. 비불자, 외도들은 명상을 수행합니다. 그들 중 다수가 죽고 나서 사선천에 왕생합니다. 그게 왜 안 좋습니까ᆞ? 왜냐하면 그럼 여러분은 500대겁 동안 살아가기 때문입니다, 오케이?여러분 그게 얼마나 긴지 압니까? 지구 해로 6조 4천억년입니다. 그들은 거기서 아무것도 할 수 없는 채로 6조 4천년 동안 있습니다. 오케이? 그래서 일단 생이 끝나면 그들은 떨어집니다. 그들은 지옥으로 곧장 떨어집니다. 알겠습니까? 그러니 여러분이 6조 4천억 년을 감당할 수 없고 불법을 만날 수 없기 때문에 그게 어려움입니다. 그리고 다 한 후에 여러분은 떨어집니다.

And the fifth difficulty is to be born in Norther continent. That’s where your life span cosmos is where you’ll be, your life span is a thousand year. You have so many blessings you enjoy yourself. And you are having such a good time, you would say ‘why bother cultivating?’ Ok? That’s why in the norther continent, there’s no Buddha Dharma. There’s no Buddha Dharma over there. So people there are to go there and live their lives and they fall. OK? In other words, you enjoy yourself. You plant also a lot of seeds to fall to the hells as well. Alright?

다섯 번째 어려움은 북 대륙에서 태어나는 겁니다. 여러분의 수명이 천년인 곳입니다. 혼자 즐길 아주 많은 복이 여러분에게 있습니다. 여러분이 그만큼 좋은 시간을 보내면 여러분은, 뭐하러 수행해?라고 할 겁니다. 오케이? 그래서 북 대륙에서는 불법이 없습니다. 그곳엔 불법이 없습니다. 그래서 사람들은 거기 가서 살고 떨어집니다. 오케이? 다른 말로 하면 여러분은 혼자 즐깁니다. 마찬가지로 지옥에 떨어질 많은 죄도 심는 겁니다. 알겠습니까?

And the sixth type of difficulty is to be born with handicapped, born handicapped. Maybe you are born with deaf, you are born, what is it? blind, OK? And because of that you cannot encounter the Buddha Dharma. You cannot get out. Because you meet encounter Buddha Dharma, you are be able to relieve for to end, to relieve your suffering and get out of your bad state. Alright?

그리고 여섯 번째 어려움은 장애를 갖고 태어나는 겁니다. 귀가 들리지 않거나, 뭡니까, 눈이 보이지 않게 태어납니다, 오케이? 그것 때문에 여러분은 불법을 만날 수 없습니다. 여러분은 나갈 수 없습니다. 여러분이 불법을 만나기 때문에 여러분의 괴로움을 끝내고, 덜고 안 좋은 상태에서 나갈 수 있습니다. 알겠습니까?

And the two more difficulty. One is to born into the world before and after the Buddha. Because, it’s the difficulty. It’s because if you are able to meet with the Buddha, then you can attain liberation very quickly. OK? You don’t even need to go to Lu Mountain Temple week after week. OK? No need to go weekend. Meet a Buddha once? That’s it. You are done. Alright? So did you born before the Buddha appears, or after the Buddha appears in the world is called difficulty. Because it’s very difficult to get out. Because the Buddha is incredible being. Once look at you, he knows what it takes to help you attain liberation to get out of the wheel. OK? So many of his disciples with him, they attain liberations like that. He spoke Dharma to them, they attain liberation immediately. They are certified to sagehood immediately. Alright? For us, for example we are experiencing right now because all the great teachers are gone already. All the great teachers like Master Hsuan Hua. He’s also gone as well. So it’s very difficult to find a good teacher. Alright.

그리고 두 가지 더 어려움이 더 있습니다. 하나는 부처님 전이나 후에 세상에 태어나는 겁니다. 여러분이 부처님을 만날 수 있으면 여러분은 매우 빨리 해탈을 얻을 수 있습니다. 오케이? 노산사에 주마다 갈 필요 없습니다. 오케이? 주말에 갈 필요 없습니다. 부처님을 한 번 만났습니까? 그겁니다. 그걸로 됐습니다. 알겠습니까? 그러니 부처님이 세상에 나투시기 전이나 후에 태어난다면 어려움이라 불립니다. 나가기가 매우 어렵기 때문입니다. 부처님은 믿기 힘든 존재이십니다 .한 번 여러분을 쳐다보면 여러분이 윤회 바퀴에서 나가도록 해탈을 얻게 돕기 위해 무엇이 필요한지 아십니다. 오케이? 그와 함께한 많은 제자들은 그처럼 해탈을 얻었습니다. 부처님께서 그들에게 법을 설하시면 즉시 해탈을 얻습니다. 즉시 성자의 과위를 증득했습니다. 알겠습니까? 우리는 예를 들어, 우리는 모든 위대한 스승들은 이미 가시도 없기 때문에 지금 당장 (그 어려움을) 경험하고 있습니다. 선화 상인과 같은 위대한 스승들 말입니다. 그(선화상인)도 이미 가셨습니다. 그러니 좋은 스승을 찾기란 매우 어렵습니다. 그렇습니다.

And finally, it’s another difficulty called the difficulty of what is known(소지장). What is that? A few of you know about this already because I spoke about this. Come back here? Anyone? What is the obstructionof what is known? Anyone knows? It’s one of the most difficult things to overcome as well. Very very difficult. It’s called obstruction because of what you know. The Buddha Dharma, Mahayana is very unflattering. We are not like, how great you are, you deserve to be successful. No, we talk about the challenges and the dangers of keep on revolving, keeping on revolving this wheel. One of the reasons why you don’t get out of the wheel is because of what you know. What you know Yes, Jared. Yes. You have a question? No?

Why is it a difficulty? Because we are all so attached to our knowledge. OK? And that’s why you refuse to listen. In order for you to become enlightened you still have to do what you are told and yet you said no, this doesn’t make sense to me. OK? I will give you an example. I used to have an one of my early disciples, my students. She’s very very spiritual. She’s a Cocasian. And she meditates everyday. She practice Chi Gong, Taichi. And then she picked up Chan from us. And then she became very ? because she was making progress very quickly. If you practice everyday like she does, you will progress so quickly. She used to practice hours upon hours. Ok? She didn’t have to go to the work. Her husband goes to work and she stayed at home. She wants to pursue her practices.

And she was with me for about a year and went through my winter retreat, Chan retreat. I said, I want to, I suspend my class for three months. I will see you after 3 months. And 3 months later when I was out, she was very happy. The day I was out, she was there with strawberries. And I was on my way to the supermarket. I wanted to go to the supermarket to get some groceries. So I said, oh here. Come with me. Let’s talk. And then we went through supermarket. ABC supermarket. It’s one of the few places where you can buy vegetarian food. And I went there, on the way 20 minutes to get there from Long Beach, you know I will talk and talk and talk. She’s so happy to ask me a lot of things so many questions. And we got to the supermarket.

Now it started raining, just few drops here and there. Big drops. So you can see it on the ground. You see these dots of raindrops falling on the ground. So I went over there from the parking spot, we were walking together. I saw Hinayana monk. The Vietnamese Hinayana monks used to stand in front of supermarket to get the donations, stands up there and hold their arms bowl like this. He just stood there for hours, didn’t say a word. OK? And people would stop by and give him food and money. He wouldn’t even say a thing. So I looked at him, so I told her, told my disciple. So I taught her the Dharma of making offering to the monk. Ok? So I said I took out 20 dollar bill. I said, take this money, go over there, and offer to him. And then you bow to him 3 times. Ok?

이제 비가 내리기 시작했습니다. 몇 방울이 여기 저기 있었습니다. 빗방울이 컸습니다. 땅에서 볼 수 있습니다. 빗방울이 땅에 떨어진 걸 볼 수 있었습니다. 주차장으로부터 우리는 함께 걷는 중이었습니다. 소승 비구를 봤습니다. 베트남 소승 비구들은 거기 서서 이렇게 발우를 들고 기부를 받기 위해 슈퍼 앞에 서있곤 합니다. 그는 거기 몇 시간 동안 한 마디도 말하지 않고 서 있습니다. 오케이? 사람들은 잠깐 멈춰서 그에게 음식과 돈을 줄 겁니다. 그느느 아무런 말도 하지 않을 겁니다. 그래서 내가 그를 쳐다보고 그녀, 내 제자에게 말했습니다. 나는 그녀에게 비구에게 공양하는 법을 가르쳤습니다. 오케이? 그래서 나는 20달러 지폐를 꺼내서, 여기 이 돈을 가지고 거기 가서 그에게 공양하십시오, 라고 말했습니다. 그러곤 그에게 3번 절하십시오. 오케이?

So you went over and she flipped, lift on his arms bowl and put in a 20 dollar bill. Then she looked back at me. It was about from here to Mark, right there. She looked at me and I said 3 bows, ok. And she looked flustered. Because the ground is kind of dirty, it’s kind of wet, you know. She looked it down and so she walked, she didn’t even bow. Ok, so I went over to her and said you know you just blew it. She said, what happened? I said, if you followed my instruction, you would have jumped from 4th Dhyana to 5th Samadhi. And she said, really? Just a minute. Let me go back and do it. I said, too late.

That goes to prove to you that it’s what you know inhibits you from following the instructions. That’s why it’s called the difficulties. The more you know, the more educated you are, it’s so much harder to teach you to get out of the wheel. To get out, you don’t need to be smart, you don’t need to be rich. You need to have blessings, that’s all. If you have blessings, you are able to follow and execute the instructions. Ok? And the reason you refuse to follow instructions because it’s against your understanding, against your knowledge, against your view of the world. What you don’t realize, what you see, understand this world is what’s keeping you here. All the worldly knowledge you have is actually what’s binding you to this world. That’s at your level.

그게 여러분이 아는 것이 여러분이 지침을 따르는 것을 방해한다고 증명해줍니다. 그래서 어려움이라고 불리는 겁니다 여러분이 더 많이 알고, 더 많이 교육 받을수록 여러분이 바퀴에서 나가도록 가르치기가 훨씬 더 어렵습니다. 나긱 위해선 똑똑하거나 부유할 필요 없습니다. 여러분에게 복이 있어야 합니다. 그게 답니다. 여러분에게 복이 있다면, 지침들을 따르고 실행할 수 있습니다. 오케이? 여러분이 지침을 따르길 거부하는 이뉴는 그게 여러분의 이해와, 여러분의 지식과, 여러분의 세계를 보는 견해와 반대되기 때문입니다. 여러분이 알지 못하는 것은, 여러분이 이 세상을 바라보고 이해하는 것이 여러분을 여기 붙잡아 둔다는 겁니다. 여러분이 가진 그 모든 세속지는 사실 여러분을 이 세상에 묶어둡니다. 그게 여러분의 단계입니다.

When you get reach a higher level, like master Hsuan Hua’s disciples, they are also enlightened. Because master trained a lot of enlightened students. And also because what they know about their own enlightment that’s keeping them from making progress. That’s how scary it is. You tell them, they will say uh oh. What do you know? I’m enlightened. So Bodhisattvas come, Guan Yin Bodhisattva comes tell them, do this! He said, no way. This doesn’t make sense to me! So the problem is Guan Yin shows up, it’s not formal Guan Yin like this. It could be a lay person. And that’s why you don’t listen. He said, I’m better than you. I’m a monk. You are a lay person. Why should I listen to you? Ok, see? I’m a monk, I’m higher rank than you. That knowledge right there, it’s stopping them.

여러분이 선화 상인의 제자처럼 더 높은 단계에 이릅니다. 그들은 깨달았습니다. 왜냐하면 선화상인께서는 많은 깨달은 학생들을 훈련시키셨기 때문입니다. 그리고 그들이 깨달음에 대해 아는 것은 그들이 진전하는 것으로부터 멀어지게 합니다. 그만큼 그게 무섭습니다. 그들에게 말하면, 그들은, 어어, 당신이 뭘 알아? 난 깨달았어 라고 말할 겁니다.그러니 보살님이, 관으 ㅁ보살님이 오셔서 이걸 해!라고 그들에게 말씀하셔도 그는, 안 돼요. 이건 내게 말이 안 돼요!라고 말합니다. 문제는 관음 보살님이 나타나셔도, 이런 모습처럼 공식적인 관음보살님이 아닙니다. 재가자일 수 있습니다. 그래서 여러분이 듣지 않습니다. 그는, 난 당신보다 나아, 난 비구야, 넌 재가자야, 내가 왜 당신 말을 들어야 하지? 라고 말합니다. 오케이? 알겠습니까? 난 비구야. 난 너보다 급이 높아. 바로 그 지식이 그들을 멈추게 합니다.

So in summary, let me summarize to you. How, what do you do, what can you do to avoid these 8 difficulties? Would you like to know? You know what’s coming. Don’t you? (laugh) Very critical. People only teach you about 8 difficulties. They don’t teach you how to get out. to avoid this, prevent these 8 difficulties. Very simple. Buddhism, you take the 8 vegetarian precepts, it will help you avoid these 8 difficulties. It’s that simple. You practice that Dharma called 8 vegetarian precepts, it will help you avoid these 8 difficulties. So far so good?

그래서 요약하자면, 내가 여러분을 위해 요약해주겠습니다. 여러분이 이 여덟 가지 어려움을 피하려면 어떻게, 뭘 할 수 있습니까? 여러분 알고 싶습니까? 그럼 여러분이 뭘 해야 할지 알고 있습니다. 안 그렇습니까? (웃음) 매우 중요합니다. 사람들은 여러분에게 여덟 가지 어려움에 대해서만 가르쳐줍니다. 어떻게 빠져 나가고, 이 여덟 가지 괴로움을 어떻게 피하고, 방지할 수 있는지 가르쳐주지 않습니다. 매우 간단합니다. 불교에서 8가지 채식 계율을 받으면 이 8가지 괴로움을 피하게 도와줄 겁니다. 그만큼 간단합니다. 여러분이 8 채식 계율이라 불리는 법을 수행한다면 이 8가지 괴로움을 피하도록 도와줄 겁니다. 지금까지 괜찮습니까?

But since you are not Buddhists, Ok. The 4 things. Number 1, be born in the good place. Meaning you born into a place where there’s a Buddha Dharma. You are here in this country, Mahayana right now is in Los Angelos, Northern California. Meaning you are born in a good place. One way to avoid 8 difficulties. Ok? Number 2, follow a good teacher. OK? Follow him, will avoid 8 difficulties. Alright?

하지만 여러분은 불자가 아니기 때문에, 오케이. 네 가지가 있습니다. 1번, 좋은 곳에 태어나십시오. 불법이 있는 곳에 태어나는 걸 의미합니다. 여러분은 여기 이 나라에 있습니다. 대승은 지금 이 LA, 북가주에 있습니다. 여러분은 좋은 곳에 태어났다는 뜻입니다. 8가지 괴로움을 피하는 한 가지 길입니다. 오케이? 2번, 좋은 스승을 따르십시오. 오케이? 그를 따르면 8가지 괴로움을 피할 겁니다. 알겠습니까?

Number 3, you make the proper vows. Alright? You make vows to become enlightened. You would say I would like to become a Buddha in the future. Because that’s the one of the biggest achievement you can ever attain in your lifetime. It’s the most difficult thing to do, you become enlightened like the Buddha. Alright? So it’s called you make the proper vows. Dont’ say I want to, that many monks say want to come back to this world and revolve the wheel and help save a lot of people. They can’t even help themselves. They can’t even get out of the wheel. What are they doing, coming back here? All they are doing is teaching the students to fall, to stay in the wheel. Improper vows. Ok?
