Friendship in Hello universe
It’s Saturday morning. Weekend started. A boy named Jack goes to his friend Junu’s house. In there, there are also many friends. They talk to each other about fun things. This place has many friendship. Friendship is a bridge that connects people who don’t know each other. The novel ‘Hello, universe’ written by Erin Entrada Kelly is a story that a boy named Virgil falls into a well, and gets stuck. Then, deaf Valencia and psychic girl Kaori and sister Gen finds Virgil. In the book ‘Hello, universe’, the author shows friendship in the story. The author also wants the readers about the definition of true friendship.
First of all, the author shows friendship by revealing character’s personalities. The authors readers to think about true friendship in this story. In the morning, Virgil comes to Kaori’s house and says about grand failure. He says that he’s meant to be friends with V.S, whose sign is scorpio. At chapter 14, Kaori says, “First off, he’s pisces. Pisces are always at odds with themselves. They’re never quite sure what to do. No self-confidence.” And, she says, “Now look at scorpio. It means she’s sharp and independent.” (103~104) Kaori can read zodiac signs, zodiac signs shows each people’s personalities. At first, it is hard to adapt at saying hello to each other. By the quote, if Virgil and Valencia become friends, they should learn about each other. At chapter 39~40, Valencia saves Virgil in the well. However, Virgil tries to talk to Valencia but can’t. Kaori says, “You barely spoke! This was your chance, Virgil. School’s over. She just rescued you from the well!” (296). Virgil is shy. He had a chance to say but didn’t. Virgil is suffering to say and make friendship.
Furthermore, the author shows friendship by Kaori’s thoughts. In chapter 33, Kaori sees Renee (Valencia) curing Chet who got bitten by a snake. Renee is professional at nature. And Kaori is good at telling fortunes. They could be a good business partners. Kaori thinks, “Just Renee knew a lot about nature and animals. Renee could help her with spells or something.” (255~256) Kaori’s thought suggests that she wants to be friends with Renee and learn about each other. Kaori can imagine her future being friends with Renee. She has courage to be friends with Renee. Additionally, at the same chapter, Kaori asks to Renee her last name to make future business names. After Renee tells her last name, Kaori thinks, “Tanaka and Somerset! That sounded perfect. Like a real business.” (256). After listening to Renee’s last name, she’s excited to be business partners with Renee.
To conclude, in ‘Hello, universe’, the author reveals friendship through personalities and Kaori’s thoughts. The author of this novel wants the readers to think about true friendship and the meaning, try to talk with your friends, and always make new friends.
