'For the First Time in Forever'은 ‘생애 처음으로’정도로 번역하면 적절할 텐데, 엘사의 대관식 겸 무도회를 준비하는 안나와 엘사의 서로 다른 마음이 잘 드러나는 노래다. 2편의 첫 부분에서도 'And then they all get married!' 하고 ‘그들은 모두 결혼했어요!’하고 소리치는 안나의 모습에서도 이미 알 수 있었듯이 안나는 꿈꾸는 사랑꾼이었다.
노래가 시작하자마자 안나가 환호하는 부분은 드디어 문이 열렸다는 부분이다. 오랜 시간 동안 닫혀만 있던 문들은 이제야 열리고 밖과 안이 소통할 수 있게 된다. 성 밖의 사람들이 성 안으로 들어올 수 있게 되고, 문 안에 있었던 엘사가 밖으로 나오게 된다. 그리고 안나는 'Am I so ready for this change'라고 이야기하며 그녀는 이미 엄청! 몹시! 이 변화를 위해 준비되어 있다고 이야기 한다. 그래야만 밖과 안의 두 닫힌 문 사이에서 외로워하던 그녀가 더 이상 혼자 있지 않아도 되기 때문이다. 그래서 그녀는 외친다. 'I won't be alone', 나는 더 이상 혼자가 아니라고!
그리고 로맨스의 전형적인 여주인공처럼 그녀는 그녀만의 님을 꿈꾸기 시작한다. 다른 모든 사람들을 만나 더 이상 외롭지 않게 되는 것도 정말 기대되는 일이지만, 오직 한 사람, 나만을 위한 그런 사람을 만날 일도 몹시 기다려진다. 그래서 그녀의 기대처럼 그 무도회에서는 'There'll be magic', 마법도 있고, 'the one', 사랑에 빠질 준비가 단단히 되어 있는 왕자님도 만나게 된다. 어쨌든 가장 중요한 것은 그녀는 더 이상 없는 존재가 아니라 'I could be noticed by someone', 누군가에 의해 제대로 된 사람대접을 받을 수 있게 될 것이라는 점이다.
이렇게 잔뜩 꿈에 들뜬 안나와는 달리 엘사의 노래는 어둡고 긴장으로 가득하다. 'Don't let them in/ Don't let them see/ Be the good girl/ You always have to be/ Conceal/ Don't feel/ Put on a show.../ Make one wrong move/ And everyone will know' 착한 소녀처럼 자신을 억누르고 숨기면 그 누구에게도 마법을 가지고 있는 자신을 들키지 않겠지만, 한 발자국이라도 잘못 움직이면 모든 것이 물거품이 되어버릴까 겁이 난다. 숨기는 것이 부모님의 유언으로 남아버려 그 이후에 어떠한 후속 조치도 취하지 못하고 그저 움츠러든 소녀에게는 사람들 앞으로 나서는 것이 너무나도 힘든 일이다. 누군가를 받아들일 준비가 만만인 안나와 달리 누군가가 들어오는 것은 곧 모두에게 진정한 자신을 들키는 것이라고 생각하는 엘사는 필사적으로 같은 말을 되뇌며 자신을 다잡는다.
그래서 왕으로서의 첫 날 그녀가 내일 첫 명령은, 'Tell the guards to open up... the gate!' 문을 열라는 것이다. 그 문을 안나가 따라 외친다. 자신의 외로움을 살필 새도 없이 그저 감추기에 급급한 엘사는 자신이 드러나는 순간 다른 이들에게 상처를 입히게 될 것이고, 그로 인해 스스로도 상처받을 것임을 확신하는 어린 아이가 숨어있다. 그리고 엘사는 스스로에게도 그것을 감추고 드러내려 하지 않는다. 그러나 이미 문을 열어야만 하는 시간이 도래했고, 그녀는 문을 열라는 명령을 내렸다. 변화는 시작되었고, 엘사는 부디 그것이 무사히 지나가길 기원하는 반면, 안나는 온몸으로 그 변화가 진정한 사랑을 찾아 외로운 세상에서 탈출할 수 있는 기회가 되기를 소망한다.
