Exercise 3: Descriptions

Describe the appearance of a thumbtack (not a pushpin) without using mathematical measurements, illustrations, or photographs.

Thumbtack (not a pushpin)의 생김새 묘사하기.

참고로 Thumbtack 과 pushpin의 이미지를 구글링해보니, 도대체 뭐가 다른건가 싶어서 챗GPT한테 각각의 특징을 물어봤다.

Thumbtack (텀택): 종이, 메모 등을 벽이나 코르크 보드에 고정할 때 사용하는 짧고 납작한 핀.

윗부분은 편평하고 넓은 금속 또는 플라스틱 원판 모양으로, 손가락으로 꾹 눌러 박을 수 있음.

아래쪽에는 뾰족한 금속 침이 수직으로 달려 있어서, 표면에 쉽게 박힘.

일반적으로 엄지로 누르는 용도라서 'thumb(엄지) + tack(못)'이라는 이름이 붙음.

Pushpin (푸시핀): 모양은 thumbtack과 비슷하지만, 머리 부분이 둥글거나 길쭉한 플라스틱 손잡이처럼 생긴 핀.

머리가 돌출되어 있어서 잡고 밀어 넣기 쉬운 구조.

보통은 다양한 색상의 플라스틱으로 되어 있어서 시각적으로도 구분이 잘 됨.

이번 문제는 아래와 같은 템플릿이 주어졌다.

초보자에게 이런 템플릿은 언제나 환영이다.

다만 수치나 그림 등은 일절 사용하면 안된다는 조건이 있다.

직접 기입한 부분은 파란색으로 표기했고, 챗GPT가 작성한 부분을 그 밑에 빨간색으로 추가했다.

보면 알겠지만, 챗GPT가 작성한 부분은 꽤 다르니 참고용으로만...

Description of a Thumbtack

A thumbtack resembles (pushpin), except that (the shape of head is different).

-> 문제에서 제시된 것도 그렇지만, pushpin과 비교하는 방식을 사용하고 있다. 그렇다면 Prerequisites로 독자가 pushpin에 대해서 이미 알고 있다는 전제가 깔려야 하는데, 그 역할을 위의 do/do not에서 하는 것이겠지?

-> 따라서 첫 문장의 pushpin에 하이퍼링크 등이 걸려 있으면 좋을 것 같다.

Head

Describe part 1, possibly comparing and contrasting with something that it resembles.

A thumbtack has a flat circle head, while a pushpin has a cylindrical grip. The material of thumbtack head is usually metal, but pushpin has plastic head and more colorful. Users can fix a thumbtack by pushing the flat surface of its head.

-> The head is a smooth, flat, and round surface — similar in shape to a coin or a metal button. It is wide enough to be comfortably pressed with a finger or thumb. Unlike pushpins, which often have plastic or bulbous tops for gripping, the thumbtack’s head is usually thin and made of metal. It lies flush against the surface when inserted.

Body / Pin

Describe part 2, possibly comparing and contrasting with something that it resembles.

A thumbtack's body is a metal fin with piercing tip, which is same with the body of pushpin. The body pierces the target and goes into the wall, board, etc.

-> The pin is a short, sharp metal point attached directly beneath the center of the head. It resembles a miniature nail or needle and is designed to pierce and hold thin materials like paper or fabric onto soft surfaces such as cork or bulletin boards. The pin is sturdy but not too long, allowing for secure yet shallow insertion.
