Illusion and Dopamine

The Great Gastby

by Mika

The most fascinating discussion we had at the book club this weekend, after reading The Great Gatsby, was this:

“If you realized Daisy was nothing more than a hallucination you created, would you still chase her?”

My answer: “I’d have to find another Daisy.”

Then another member added: “Because Daisy is dopamine.” That struck me like a blow to the head.

I was struggling to pull myself out of a recent drawdown. Watching how I cope, I realized I was exploring another world, searching for a new object of immersion.

I cast the roles needed for the script I’ve written, chasing dopamine. But when that story ends and I lose interest, the background turns gray—and I find it unbearable. Rewatching Season 1 is no fun, Season 2 is already dull. So I write a new synopsis, dive in again, and chase dopamine once more.

To break free from this pattern, I want to redirect that energy inward, in search of a completely different way to pull myself out of this drawdown. I want to build my inner strength—without relying on outside fuel to jump-start me.

Here is a book review of The Great Gatsby I wrote using the same tool my LinkedIn friend so interestingly shared. Take a look!
