and life’s little luxuries
You can't buy happiness, but I can buy a few small things I like-and that's kind of the same thing: fried chicken for the kids and beer for the grown-ups on the weekend, freshly roasted coffee beans for my early morning ritual, and a new pair of running shoes when my trusted workhorse finally wears out.
Speaking of new running shoes—yes, happiness is the pillowy-soft yet bouncy feel of a fresh midsole on your first run, making you feel like you could run all day. If you can't relate to this feeling, man, you're seriously missing out on life.
No, my main motivation for running isn't to lose weight, stay fit and healthy, improve my mental health, or prove my worth to myself. These are all benefits of running, but I run simply for the sake of running.
When you stop caring about how many calories you burn, how fast you go, or whether your heart rate is in the optimal zone—and instead focus purely on how you feel, your breath, or the stream of thoughts flowing through your mind—you'll know exactly what I'm talking about: the pure joy of running.
Winter on the Pacific West Coast is dark and wet, with little sunshine. But winter running is just as fun as running in other glorious seasons. I'm not sure if it's scientifically true, but the air feels fresher and crisper when it's cold. When it snows, I love the cold sensation of snowflakes
landing on my exposed arms and legs, instantly melting on contact. And on the rare occasions of a clear sky, winter sunsets seem even more beautiful.
