세 사람은 마치 막이 내려간 뒤 커튼 뒤의 배우들처럼 주섬주섬 자리에서 일어난다. 그러나 과장된 표현이나 몸짓을 하지 않도록 주의한다. 그들은 육체적으로나 정신적으로 무기력한 상태로 그저 할 일을 마친 뒤에 침묵할 뿐이다. 세 사람은 가느다란 조명 주위에 모여 바닥에 앉아 함께 빛을 바라본다. 마치 추운 겨울밤 작은 촛불로 몸을 덥히려는 사람들처럼. 세 사람은 동시에 같은 대사를 똑같이 말하는 데 음성의 차이에 따라 자연스럽게 화음이 만들어진다.

그리고 행동으로 옮기지 못하게 된다. 이렇게 흐름은 뒤틀리면서, 위대하고 중대한 결단들이 창백한 사유의 기색에 물들어 병들며, 그리하여 결단의 본래의 빛깔 그리하여 양심은 우리 모두를 겁쟁이로 만들어서, 우리가 알지 못하는 세계로 날아가는 걸까? 차라리 지금 겪는 고통을 감내하게 되고 되돌아온 여행자가 없으며, 의지를 혼란에 빠뜨리고, 미지의 나라, 누군가의 경계로부터 죽음 이후의 두려운 무언가가 오는데, 지친 삶 속에서 신음하고 땀 흘리면서, 오직 단검 하나로? 누가 무거운 짐을 짊어지려 하는가, 그 자신이 그의 고요함을 그 합당치 못한 자의 인내심을 얻는 데 사용할 수 있을 때, 관료의 무례, 멸시받는 사랑의 고통 경멸, 법의 지연, 압제자의 불의, 교만한 자의 모욕, 시간의 채찍과 비웃음을 견뎌낼 사람은 누구인가, 그래서 수명이 길어지는 것은 재앙이다. 우리는 멈춰 설 수밖에 없는데 - 우리가 이 필멸의 삶을 벗어났을 때 존경심이 생기고, 죽음의 잠에서 어떤 꿈이 나올지, 잠자는 것, 어쩌면 꿈을 꾸는 것 – 그게 바로 문제야. 간절히 바라는 일이지. 죽는다는 건 잠자는 것. 육신은 상속자. 이것은 완성 마음의 고통과 수많은 자연의 충격들이 더 이상 없게 되는 것. 단 한 번의 잠으로 우리를 끝낼 수 있고 또 그것들에 맞서 그것들을 끝낼 수 있다. 죽는다는 것, 그것은 잠자는 것. 아니면 난폭한 운명의 돌팔매와 화살을 휘두르며 고난의 바다에 맞서 싸울 것인지, 사는 것과 죽는 것 중 어떤 것이 진심으로 고귀한 일인지, 그것이 바로 의문이다.
