Today is a national holiday in the United States called 'Martin Luther King Day'. Every year on the third Monday of January, Americans have the opportunity to reflect on the life and achievement of Martin Luther King, Jr., his legacy on American society, and his impact on the world.
Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. was the leading voice in the American civil rights movement who led nonviolent resistance. The protests he organized, the marches he led and the speeches he delivered continue to live on and resonate in the hearts of Americans today. They were also key in bringing about landmark legislation such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
For his peaceful efforts to fight brutal racial inequality, King became the youngest person to win the Nobel Peace Prize. The whole world thanked him for the difficult and wonderful job of not returning evil for evil. And years after his death, his birthday became a national holiday.
(Only four days after the assassination of Dr. King in 1968, the first legislation insisting on a Martin Luther King, Jr. Federal Holiday was introduced by Michigan congressman John Conyers.) Many schools, streets and buildings are named after King, and in 2011 he became the first African-American to receive a monument on the National Mall in Washington.
