가래떡
인스타그램용
옛날 글을 인스타그램용으로 만들어 보았다. 완전한 영작은 아니더라도 할 수 있는 한 영어로 표현해보자. 문득 우리 글로 읽고픈 분들도 있지 않을까? 싶다. 그래서 우리글로도 쓰고 그걸 할 수 있는 만큼만 영작을 해놓기로 했다. 영어를 앞에 놓을까? 한글을 앞에 놓을까? 잠시 망설였다. 그러나 영어로의 소통을 위해 시작한 인스타그램이므로 나의 목적에 맞게 영어를 앞에 놓기로 했다. 점점 하다 보면 더 좋은 방법이 생각나겠지. 일단 시작했다는 데에 의미가 크다. 하하 파이팅!
There is a rice cake mill in front of our apartment complex. It has been over 10 years since we moved here, so this rice cake mill that has been here before we came is over 10 years old. The owner couple are getting older with us. This house makes rice cakes very tasty. I have a nostalgia for Garaetteok. When I was very young, when I came home from school very far from home, there was a soft rice cake delivered from the next door. At that time, when we made garae-tteok on New Year's Day, neighbors shared them with each other. How delicious they were to me, who came back hungry and exhausted. On New Year’s Day, many people went to the mill to make garae-tteok. So, I had to wait in a very long line to make them. Going to the very crowded mill with my mom is a wonderful memory. It was also a big event for the whole family to get together and chop long Garaetteok with a knife to make them the size of Tteoggug. Mom put a lot of sliced rice cakes on a large tray and kept them in the storage room. Me and my friend sneaked into the room and skipped the rice cake. When they hardens, we baked them on a round stove until they swell up like cookies. How delicious they were at that time when there were no good snacks. That's why I still order Garaetteok from time to time.
우리 아파트 단지 앞에는 떡집이 있다. 옛날부터 있던 떡집이다. 우리가 입주하고 십 년 정도 되어가니 떡집은 그 이상 되었다. 떡집 주인아저씨 아줌마도 그래서 함께 나이 들어가고 있다. 이 집은 떡을 참 맛있게 한다. 난 가래떡에 대한 향수가 있다. 아주 어릴 때 멀고도 먼 학교에서 돌아왔을 때 나를 반기던 어느 집에선가 가져다준 말랑말랑 가래떡. 그땐 그렇게 설날이면 집집마다 가래떡을 했고 이웃에 나누어 주었다. 명절이면 커다란 양푼을 이고 떡방앗간에 가 줄을 아주 길게 서서 한참을 기다려 많은 가래떡을 뽑았다. 엄마를 따라다니던 그 모든 것이 추억되어 가래떡 하면 언제나 나를 아주 어린 시절로 몰고 간다. 그 뽑아온 많은 가래떡을 온 식구가 모여 앉아 떡국 떡으로 써는 것도 큰 행사였다. 엄마는 썰어진 많은 떡국떡을 창고방에 보관했다. 친구랑 나는 몰래 거기 들어가 커다란 양푼 속 떡국 떡을 야금야금 많이도 가져다 먹었다. 굳어지면 석유난로 위에 놓아 동그랗게 과자처럼 부풀어 오를 때까지 구워 먹었다. 아, 별로 간식다운 간식이 없던 그 옛날, 그 떡들은 얼마나 맛있었는지 모른다. 그래서 난 지금도 툭하면 가래떡을 주문해 먹는다.
