We bought 5% of the Walt Disney Company in 1966.
우리는 1966년 월트 디즈니 컴퍼니의 지분 5%를 샀어요.
It cost us $4 million dollars.
4백만 달러가 들었어요.
$80 million bucks was the valuation of the whole thing.
이 회사의 전체 시총은 8천만 달러였어요.
300 and some acres in Anaheim.

The Pirate’s ride had just been put in.
해적의 놀이기구가 디즈니랜드에 막 투입되었죠.
It cost $17 million bucks.
그 놀이기구를 들여오는데 1,700만 달러가 들었죠
The whole company was selling for $80 million.
그런데도 디즈니 시총은 8천만 달러였죠.
Mary Poppins had just come out.
메리포핀스 만화영화가 막 나왔던 때였어요.
Mary Poppins made about $30 million that year, and seven years later you’re going to show it to kids the same age.
메리포핀스는 그 해 약 3천만 달러를 벌었지요. 7년이 지나면 여러분들도 아이들에게 이 영화를 보여줄걸요.
It’s like having an oil well where all the oil seeps back in.
이는 기름이 다시 채워지는 유정과도 같지요.
Now the [numbers today are] probably different, but in 1966 they had 220 pictures of one sort or another.
현재 숫자는 아마 다르겠지만 1966년 당시에는 220개의 영화를 가지고 있었어요.
They wrote them all down to zero –
근데 재무제표에는 그 영화가치가 모두 제로였어요

there were no residual values placed on the value of any Disney picture up through the ‘60s.
1960년대에는 디즈니 영화의 가치가 재무제표에는 없었어요.
So [you got all of this] for $80 million bucks, and you got Walt Disney to work for you.
그래서 8천만 달러에 [이 회사를 전부 사서] 월트 디즈니가 여러분을 위해 일하게 만들 수 있었죠.
It was incredible.
끝내주는 일이었죠.
You didn’t have to be a genius to know that the Walt Disney company was worth more than $80 million.
월트 디즈니 회사가 8천만 달러 이상의 가치가 있음을 알기 위해서 굳이 천재일 필요는 없었죠.
$17 million for the Pirate’s Ride.
해적 놀이기구에만 1,700만 달러였어요.
It’s unbelievable.
믿어지지 않지만
But there it was.
진짜 그랬답니다.
And the reason was, in 1966 people said, “Well, Mary Poppins is terrific this year, but they’re not going to have another Mary Poppins next year, so the earnings will be down.”
그 이유는 1966년 당시 사람들이 "음, 메리 포핀스는 올해엔 끝내줬지만 내년엔 피크아웃으로 수입이 감소할 거야"라고 생각했기 때문이죠.
I don’t care if the earnings are down like that.
저는 이익이 줄어도 상관없었어요.
You know you’ve still got Mary Poppins to throw out in seven more years, assuming kids squawk a little.
7년이 지나 새로운 아이들이 자라면 다시 메리포핀스를 보여줘야 하잖아요.
I mean there’s no better system than to have something where, essentially, you get a new crop every seven years and you get to charge more each time.
7년마다 새로운 작물(새로운 아이들)로 요금을 더 거두는 그런 시스템보다 더 좋은 건 없죠.
$80 million dollars [sigh].
고작 8천만 달러였답니다. [한숨]
I went out to see Walt Disney (he’d never heard of me; I was 35 years old).
저는 월트 디즈니를 보러 갔어요. (그는 나에 대해 들어본 적이 없었죠 저는 고작 35세 젊은이였거든요.)
We sat down and he told me the whole plan for the company – he couldn’t have been a nicer guy.
자리에 앉아서 그는 내게 회사의 전체 계획을 들려주었죠. 그는 더할 나위 없이 좋은 사람이었죠.
It was a joke.
요 부분은 농담이고요. [디즈니가 버핏에게 친절하게 계획을 말해준 건 농담이란 뜻 같음. 실제로는 문전박대??? 다른 문헌을 한번 봐야겠음]
If he’d privately gone to some huge venture capitalist, or some major American corporation, if he’d been a private company, and said “I want you to buy into this. This is a deal,”
만약 그가 개인적으로 대형 벤처투자회사 또는 대기업에 갔다고 해보죠. 디즈니가 비상장사라고 해보죠. 그리고 회사를 팔고 싶다고 제안했다고 해 봅시다.
they would have bought in based on a valuation of $300 or $400 million dollars.
그렇다면 아마 3억 달러 또는 4억 달러의 밸류에이션으로 팔렸을 겁니다.
The very fact that it was just sitting there in the market every day convinced [people that $80 million was an appropriate valuation].
그런데도 사람들은 시장에서 거래되는 가격만 보고 디즈니의 시총이 8천만 달러인 것은 적절하다고 보았죠.
Essentially, they ignored it because it was so familiar. But that happens periodically on Wall Street.
핵심은 너무나 익숙했기 때문에 진실을 외면한 겁니다. 이런 일은 월스트리트에서 주기적으로 일어나죠.

and she was showing at the Loews Theater on 45th and Broadway in New York,

and here I am with a briefcase at 2:00 in the afternoon heading in to see Mary Poppins.

I almost felt like I had to rent a kid.
