마션 희망의 노래

David Bowie의 Starman

마션에서 화성 탐사를 이끄는 대장은 클래식한 캐릭터다. 멜리사 루이스가 좋아하는 취향의 음악들로 가득 채워져 있는 영화 마션에서 가장 인상적인 음악은 희망을 말하는 느낌의 노래 Starman이다. David Bowie의 노래로 1972년에 발표한 앨범 'The rise and fall of ziggy stardust and spiders from mars'의 수록곡 4번째 음악이다. 

가볍게 말하면 노땅들의 음악인 올드 팝송이다. 상당히 경쾌하다. 음율에 희망이 담겨져 있는 팝송이다. 요즘에는 기레기가 많은지 제대로된 기사를 찾기가 힘들다. 그냥 대충 끼워맞춘 기사가 너무 많은 듯 하다. 

데이빗 보위의 최고 히트곡중 하나로 자리한 'Starman'은 그들의 성공과 함께 하였다. 우리가 지금은 화성에 가려고 안간힘을 쓰고 있지만 과거에 나온 소설들을 보면 화성에서 지구로 탐사온 외계인들이 주인공이 되는 경우가 많았다. 화성에서 온 Ziggy라는 외계인의 성공과 좌절이 담긴 앨범에 들어가 있는 노래다. 

지금까지 가장 기억에 남는 화성관련 SF소설로는 레이 브래드버리의 '화성연대기'이다. 미지의 세계이자 동경의 대상인 화성에 관련한 연작 소설이다. 나쁘지 않았던 기억이 난다. 지금도 책장에 고이 잘 모셔져 있다. 

참고로 Starman을 부른 데이빗 보위는 가수이며 제작자이며 미술가, 배우로 자리잡은 끼가 넘치는 사람중 하나다.
