나바호 인디언의 춤

콜럼버스가 신대륙을 발견한 이후 백인들은 자신들의 꿈과 이상을 실현하기 위해 영국을 떠나 종교의 자유를 찾아 아메리카 대륙에 정착했다. 광활한 대지 위에서 자연과 함께 공존하며 살던 인디언들은 백인들의 이주 이후 이 땅에서 처지 곤란한 불편한 존재가 되었다. 빼앗으려는 자들과 지키려는 자들의 전쟁은 치열했고 승자와 패자가 정해질 때까지 많은 사람들이 학살되고 고통받았다.
인디언으로부터 빼앗은 땅에서 미국은 마침내 근대 민주주의에 토대가 되는 독립선언문을 발표하며 영국으로부터 완전한 자유를 찾으며 이렇게 선언하였다. "우리는 다음과 같은 것을 자명한 진리라고 생각한다. 즉, 모든 사람은 평등하게 태어났고, 조물주는 몇 개의 양도할 수 없는 권리를 부여하였으며, 그 권리 중에는 생명과 자유와 행복의 추구가 있다.".
미국의 탄생과 동시에 인디언 비극의 역사는 시작되었다. 인디언의 많은 문화나 정체성은 사라져갔고 미국 정부가 지정한 ‘인디언 보호 구역’이라는 열악한 환경 속에서 경제적 빈곤을 겪으며 전통을 유지하며 살고 있다. 사진 속 아메리칸 원주민은 돈을 벌기 위해 추는 춤일까 전통을 지키기 위해 추는 춤일까 알 수는 없지만 단지 관광 코스의 한 부분으로만 여겨지지 않기를 바라는 마음이다.
인간의 욕망에서 피어나는 잔인함은 지금도 여전히 전쟁으로 표현되고 있다.
권위로 약자를 정복하려는 행위는 국가와 국가간의 전쟁 뿐이 아니다. 회사, 가족, 학교, 교회 등 일상 속 관계에서도 발견할 수 있다. 끝없는 자본주의와 치열한 경쟁 사회에 살면서 평화와 사랑을 말하면 너무 낭만적이고 모순인 걸까.
A dance of Native American
After Columbus discovered the New World, white people left England to realize their dreams and settled in America in search of religious freedom.
The Native Americans, who lived in coexistence with nature in a vast landscape, faced difficult challenges after the migration of white settlers. The war between those who wanted to steal and those who wanted to protect what was theirs was fierce, and many people were slaughtered and suffered until a winner and a loser were decided.
The British settlers took some of the Native American land, and later some of these settlers declared independence from Britain through the issuing of the 'Declaration of Independence'. This document is often seen as the foundation of modern democracy. The Declaration of Independence states, "We hold that the following truths are self-evident: that all men are created equal, and that the Creator has endowed them with several inalienable rights, among which are the rights of life, liberty, and happiness."
The history of Native American tragedy began with the birth of the United States. Many aspects of Native American culture and identity have disappeared over the years. Today, indigenous Americans live in poor areas labelled 'Indian Reservations' that are designated by the US government. Many of these people live in poverty and try to maintain their traditions. It is unknown whether the Native Americans in the photo are dancing to make money or to preserve traditions, but they hope that they will not be merely viewed as a tourist attraction.
Human desire can be cruel and is often expressed through war. The strong conquering the weak is not a relationship that is limited to war between nation-states. This relationship can be seen in everyday situations and ordinary places; at work, in the family, at school, or at church. We live in a society of endless capitalism and fierce competition; is it too romantic and contradictory to talk about peace and love?
