경복궁의 2023년

서울은 궁궐의 도시이다. 서울에는 5개의 궁궐이 있으며 굽이치는 긴 역사를 지나 현재까지 도심의 대표 관광지이자 시민들의 휴식처로 자리하고 있다. 궁궐은 우리나라 건축물의 특성상 의미있는 이름을 가지고 있다. 경복궁은 군자만년(君子萬年) 개이경복(介爾景福)에서 따온 이름으로. ‘이미 술에 취하고 덕에 배부르니 군자만년 그대의 큰 복을 도우리’, 즉 길이 길이 크게 복을 누린다는 말이다.

그동안 궁궐의 문은 굳게 닫혀있었다. 일부 영역을 시민들이 구경할 수 있도록 개방했지만, 일반적인 문화재로써의 역할에 그쳤다. 우리나라도 최근 국제사회에 얼굴을 당당히 드러내면서 부터 전문가들에 의해 경복궁과 그 일대는 어떻게 활용되어야 하는지 제언이 있어왔다. 예를들어 경회루를 실제 국빈만찬에 사용할 때 그 가치와 국격을 올릴수 있다는 점과 새로운 광화문 광장 디자인과 쓰임새에 대해서 말이다.

Seoul is a city of palaces. It is home to five grand palaces, each carrying a rich history and now serving as prominent tourist attractions and serene retreats for citizens. These palaces bear meaningful names, reflective of Korea's architectural heritage. Gyeongbokgung, for example, derives its name from "君子萬年 介爾景福" (gunja mannyeon gae-i gyeongbok), which means "You have already drunk and are full of virtue, so for ten thousand years, I will help you enjoy great blessings." In essence, it signifies enduring great fortune.

For a long time, the gates of these palaces were firmly closed. Though parts of them were open to the public, their roles were limited to being cultural heritage sites. As Korea began to assert itself on the international stage, experts have proposed various ideas on how Gyeongbokgung and its surroundings could be better utilized. For instance, using Gyeonghoeru Pavilion for state banquets could enhance its value and prestige, and discussions have taken place about the new design and functionality of Gwanghwamun Square.

마침내 구찌와 아미를 비롯한 글로벌 패션브랜드들이 경복궁을 찾았고, 그 곳에서 작품을 탄생시켰다. 수차례 행사를 치르고 보니 생각했던 것 보다 더 경복궁이라는 공간이 세계의 다양한 작품과도 잘 어울렸다. 행사 전후의 많은 이야기들이 회자되고 있다. 인상을 찌푸리게 만드는 소식 조차도 새로운 세상을 향한 희망찬 발걸음 아래의 작은 그림자일 것이라 기대해본다.

‘길이 길이 크게 복을 누리게’ 하고자 지어진 경복궁은 2023년에 새로운 역할을 감당중이다. 그 무게에는 영광스러움과 고통이 동시에 존재할 것이다. 새로워진 관점을 가지고 우리는 이제 경복궁이라는 세계적인 문화유산에 무엇을 담을 수 있을까?

Even the occasional controversial news is seen as a small shadow beneath the hopeful strides towards a new era.

Gyeongbokgung, built to ensure "enduring great fortune," has taken on a new role in 2023. This new role carries both glory and challenges. With a fresh perspective, what new dimensions can we add to Gyeongbokgung, this global cultural heritage?
