이 책은 실화를 바탕으로 한 감동적인 이야기로, 수단의 과거와 현재를 상징하는 두 주인공의 삶을 교차하며 보여준다. 1985년 수단 내전으로 피난길에 오른 소년 살바와 2008년 매일 물을 긷기 위해 걷는 소녀 니야의 이야기를 교차해서 보여주고 있다. 살바는 전쟁 중에 가족과 헤어져 아프리카 대륙을 횡단하며 사자, 악어, 굶주림의 위협 속에서도 끝까지 살아남아 난민 캠프를 전전한다. 세월이 흘러 미국으로 입양된 살바는 그곳에서 공부를 하던 중, 아버지가 수단에서 살아계신다는 기적 같은 소식을 듣게 된다. 병상에 누운 아버지가 오염된 물 때문에 병에 걸린 것을 본 살바는 고국에 깨끗한 우물을 만들어주기로 결심하고 '수단을 위한 물(Water for South Sudan)' 프로젝트를 시작한다. 한편, 니야는 매일 8시간 동안 더러운 물을 긷기 위해 뙤약볕 아래를 걷느라 학교에도 가지 못하는 고단한 삶을 반복하고 있다. 그러던 어느 날, 성인이 된 살바가 이끄는 작업팀이 니야의 마을을 찾아와 마침내 땅속에서 깨끗한 물이 솟구치는 우물을 완성한다. 살바는 비록 자신의 부족과 적대적인 관계였던 다른 부족의 마을이었음에도 불구하고, 증오 대신 화해와 사랑을 실천하며 그들에게 생명의 물을 선물한다. 결국 이 책은 두 사람의 만남을 통해 전쟁의 비극을 넘어서는 인류애와 희망, 그리고 물 한 방울이 가져오는 삶의 위대한 변화를 깊은 감동으로 전하고 있다.

이번 학기에 이 책을 선정하여 학생들이 읽도록 독려하고 있다. 독려하는 이유는 단순히 영어 실력을 높이는 것을 넘어, 살바와 니야의 삶을 통해 역경을 이겨내는 회복 탄력성과 성숙한 세계 시민 의식을 동시에 배울 수 있기 때문이다. 학업과 진로 고민으로 지친 아이들에게 "한 걸음씩만 더" 나아가는 살바의 끈기는 강력한 동기부여가 되며, 매일 물을 긷기 위해 8시간을 걷는 니야의 일상은 우리가 당연하게 누리는 평범한 삶의 소중함을 깊이 있게 성찰하게 한다. 또한, 부족 간의 오랜 증오를 딛고 화해의 우물을 파는 결말은 용서와 인류애의 가치를 일깨워주며, 중3 수준에 적합한 명료한 문체와 가정법 등 필수 문법 요소들은 학습적 성취감까지 안겨줄 것이다.

제미나이 앱을 통해 글의 가정법을 포함하여 글의 내용을 재구성하여 다시 쓰게 했다. 그리고 그 텍스트를 바탕으로 학생들과 가정법과거 문장들을 연습해 보았다.

On the other side of the timeline, Nya spends her days walking to a distant pond to collect water for her family. If the pond were nearby, Nya would not have to walk eight hours every single day under the sun. Her feet are often sore from thorns, and the plastic container is heavy. If her container were lighter, her journey back home would be significantly easier. Everything changes when a crew arrives to drill a well in her village. If water were more accessible, Nya’s younger sister wouldn't get sick so often from contaminated sources. Ultimately, Salva’s efforts bridge their worlds. If Salva didn't share his vision of hope, Nya's village would still be trapped in a cycle of struggle.
