조지 오웰의 <1984>는 1949년에 쓰여진 책이다. 21세기를 사는 우리에게 강력한 메시지를 주는 소설로서, 미래를 이렇게 잘 예언한 책이 있을까 늘 감탄하게 된다. CCTV, 스마트폰 위치 추적, 인터넷 검색 기록 등 매일 매일 우리의 정보가 끊임없이 수집되는 세상에 살고 있는데, 소설 속 텔레스크린을 보면 나의 편의를 위해 제공된 정보가 나를 통제하는 수단으로 쓰이는 점에 대해 고민하지 않을 수 없다. 주인공 윈스턴 스미스는 당이 조직하는 진실에 늘 의문을 품고 몰래 일기를 쓰면서 저항을 꿈꾸지만 거대한 권력 시스템 앞에서 처참하게 무너지고 만다. AI 시대에 살고 있는 우리는 적어도 하루에 한번은 챗지피티나 제미나이 등 인공지능 프로그램을 사용하고 있다. 여러가지 편리한 점은 있지만 가짜뉴스, 여론 조작, 알고리즘에 의해 보여지는 편향된 정보들이 얼마나 위험한지도 문득문득 깨닫게 된다. 이런 점들을 한번 깊이 고찰해보기 위해 학생들에게 이 책을 읽도록 추천한다. 독재 권력은 사람들의 어휘도 줄여 버리는데, 우리가 사용하는 언어가 우리의 사고력을 확장할 수도 있지만 제한할 수 도 있다는 점을 생각해 보기를 원한다. 그래서 아이들이 독서를 통해 왜 어휘력을 길러야 하는지 그 이유를 찾을 수 있다. 비판적 사고가 왜 필요한지, 내 자유는 어떻게 보장받을 수 있는 것인지, 어떻게 하면 깨어있는 시민이 될 수 있는 것인지 등등에 대해 생각해 보기를 원한다. 이런 점들을 생각하면서 제미나이에게 텍스트를 재구성해보게 했다. 택스트를 통해 배울 문법은 비교급과 최상급이다.
