이스라엘은 고대이스라엘왕국이 멸망하고 전세계로 흩어졌던 유태민족이 1948년 5월 팔레스타인 지역에서 다시 세운 나라다. 유태인은 이스라엘 국민 중 80% 정도이고 나머지는 아랍계이다. 이스라엘은 1948년 건국 이후 지금에 이르기까지 국토 경계가 꾸준히 변해 왔다. 팔레스타인인들이 살던 곳을 유태인들이 들어와 살면서 갈등을 겪어 왔다. 웨스트뱅크와 가자지구는 팔레스타인이 지배하는 지역으로 굳어졌다. 

이스라엘은 유태인들의 조상인 아브라함과 다윗왕 그리고 예수 그리스도가 살았던 땅이다. 구약 성경가 신약 성경에 나오는 숱한 지명이 지금의 이스라엘에 속해 있다. 이스라엘 곳곳에 고대 유적이 그득하다. 수도는 예루살렘이지만 국제적으로 예루살렘은 수도로 인정받지 못하고 있다. 이스라엘의 외국 공관들은 텔아비브에 위치한다. 예루살렘은 기독교, 유대교, 이슬람교의 성지다. 예루살렘 올드 시티는 네 구역으로 나뉜다. 무슬림, 기독교, 유대교, 아르메니아 구역이 그것이다. 

이스라엘은 네 차례에 걸친 중동전쟁의 한가운데에 있었다. 1948년, 1956년, 1967년, 1973년에 있었던 전쟁이 그것이다. 이스라엘은 이집트를 비롯한 주변 아랍국가들에 비해 수적으로 현격한 열세에 있었으나 미국의 지원 아래 오히려 영토를 늘려왔다. 이스라엘과 팔레스타인, 아랍권 국가들과의 갈등은 여전히 진행형이며 중동의 불안 요인으로 남아 있다.
