시리아는 오늘날 심각한 내전 상태에 처해 있다. 시리아 북쪽에 살고 있는 쿠르드족이 끝없이 독립을 위해 몸부림치고 있는 데다가 이슬람국가가 시리아의 상당 부분을 점령하고 있어 시리아 정부의 힘이 미치고 있지 못하다. 내전으로 난민들이 발생하여 지중해를 건너 유럽으로 목숨을 걸고 탈출하고 있다.
시리아는 1920년 프랑스의 지배하에 들어가 1946년에 독립했다. 러시아를 비롯한 구공산권 국가와 긴밀한 관계를 맺고 있어 한국은 시리아와 외교관계가 없다. 2016년 7월까지 여행 금지 국가로 정해져 있기도 하다. 시리아는 고대 소아시아 지역에 위치해 있어 역사적 유적이 적지 않다. 특히 팔미라 지역이 대표적이다. 그러나 팔미라의 유적들은 내전 와중에 얼마나 파괴되었는지 정확히 파악되고 있지 않다. 이슬람국가가 상당수의 유적을 파괴한 것만은 분명하다.
시리아에서 가장 높은 산은 헤르몬산으로 레바논과의 국경에 위치해 있고 남쪽 사면은 이스라엘이 지배하고 있다. 높이가 2,814미터이다. 수도는 다마스쿠스이고 주요 도시로 홈스, 라타키아, 알레포 등이 있다. 라카 지역은 이슬람국가의 거점이다. 다마스쿠스는 세계에서 가장 오래된 도시 중 하나로 중국 시안에서 시작되는 실크로드의 종착지이기도 하다. 오랜 유적이 있는 팔미라는 시리아 국토의 중부 사막 지대에 위치해 있다. 시리아에 평화가 정착되는 날에 지구촌은 한결 안정된 정세를 찾을 것이다.
