<손이 하는 말>

내가 더 어렸을 때

아무것도 모를 때

길 잃을까 걱정스러워

엄마가 늘 내게 하던 말

"꽉 잡아, 손 놓치면 안 돼!"

야윈 얼굴로 병실에

힘없이 누운 할머니

메마른 손을 꼭 잡고

엄마가 속삭이던 말

"이겨내요, 내 손 놓치면 안 돼!"

길을 잃어 서러운 어린애처럼

할머니 손을 붙들고 우는 엄마

슬픔에 흔들리는 등을

가만히 가만히 쓰다듬어줬어

토닥 토닥 토닥

내 손이 해주던 말

엄마는 들었을까?

토닥 토닥 토닥

따스한 손길의 위로

마음으로 느꼈을까?

When I was very small

When I knew nothing

Mother always said

worried she might lose me

"Hold tight
Don't let go of my hand!"

Now in a quiet hospital room
Grandmother lies pale and still
Mother holds her thin hand
and whispers

"Hold on
Don't let go of my hand!"

Like a lost, sad child

Mother cries
while holding on

I quietly, quietly
stroke my mother’s back

Pat pat pat

What my hand was saying
I wonder if Mother heard

Pat pat pat

The small warmth
of my touch
I wonder if she felt it
