미국 대학 중 가장 어드미션 에세이가 어려운 대학은?
미래교육연구소는 입시 컨설팅을 통해 매년 많은 학생들의 미국 등 해외대학 입시를 도와주고 있다. 입시 컨설팅을 하면서 느끼는 것은 에세이 쓰기가 참 쉽지 않다는 것이다. 특히 상위권 대학일수록 더욱 그렇다. 그렇다면 아이비리그대학을 포함해 미국 대학 입시 에세이 가운데 가장 어려운 대학은 어딜까? 시카고 대학이다.
시카고 대학은 오랫동안 도발적인 에세이 질문으로 유명했다. 아이비리그 그 어떤 대학보다 주제가 어렵다. 일반 학생들은 그 주제를 이해하기 조차 힘들다.
시카고 대학도 이를 인정하고 있다. 이 대학은 홈페이지를 통해 "우리는 학생들이 그들 자신, 그들의 취향, 그리고 야망에 대해 말할 수 있는 기회라고 생각한다. 그들은 아주 진지하거나, 완전히 공상적이거나, 아니면 그 사이에 있는 무언가로 다가갈 수 있다.
매년 우리는 새로 입학한 현재 대학생들에게 이메일을 보내 에세이 주제를 물어본다. 우리는 수백 개의 응답을 받는데, 그 중 많은 응답은 웅변적이고, 흥미를 유발하며, 완전히 말도 안 될 정도로 도전적이다."
이 대학은 학생과 동문으로부터 의견을 받아서 에세이 주제를정한다. 이 대학은 반드시 써야 할 에세이 1개와 나머지 6개 가운데 하나를선택하도록 하고 있다.

In Homer’s Iliad, Helen had a “face that launched a thousand ships.” A millihelen, then, measures the beauty needed to launch one ship. The Sagan unit is used to denote any large quantity (in place of “billions and billions”). A New York Minute measures the period of time between a traffic light turning green and the cab behind you honking. Invent a new unit of measurement. How is it derived? How is it used? What are its equivalents?

Be original, creative, thought provoking.
