UC 버클리, 이런 학생을 뽑는다.
UC는 학업적으로 우수할뿐 아니라 비학업적으로도 우수한 학생들을 찾는다. 다른 주립대와 달리 많은 학생들이 지원을 함에도 에세이란 요소를 중요하게 보는 이유가 있다. UC버클리는 8개 에세이 주제 가운데 4개 주제를 선택해 쓰도록 하고 있다.
UC버클리에는 성적이 우수한 많은 학생들이 지원을 한다. 그러나 성적이 같다고 모든 성적이 같은 것은 아니다. A라는 학교에 다는 학생의 3.8 성적과 B 학교에 다는 학생의 3.79는 숫자는 같지만 차이가 많을 것이다. UC는 바로 이들 성적을 가진 학생들간의 차이점을 찾으려 노력한다. 성적만 우수한 학생이 아닌 속이 꽉찬 학생을 뽑으려는 것이다.
성적은 같지만 실제로 우수한 학생을 찾기 위해서는 학업과 함께 학생의 비학업적 성취 수준을 보면 알 수 있다. 성적만 좋은 학생과 성적도 좋고 비학업적 요소가 좋은 학생을 찾는 것이다.
UC 버클리는 이런 학생을 찾는다.
▶Initiative, motivation, leadership, persistence, service to others, special potential and substantial experience with other cultures
▶All achievement in light of the opportunities available to you
▶Any unusual circumstances or hardships you have faced and the ways in which you have overcome or responded to them.
Having a hardship is no guarantee of admission. If you choose to write about difficulties you have experienced, you should describe:
- How you confronted and overcame your challenges, rather than describing a hardship just for the sake of including it in your application
- What you learned from or achieved in spite of these circumstances

신입생의 경우 Academic accomplishments, beyond those shown in your transcript
편입생은 include interest in your intended major, explain the way in which your academic interests developed, and describe any related work or volunteer experience.
Explain your reason for transferring if you are applying from a four-year institution or a community college outside of California. For example, you may substantiate your choice of a particular major or your interest in studying with certain faculty on our campus.

- Your intended field of study
- Your interest in your specific major
- Any school or work-related experience
For a scholarship, we recommend that you elaborate on the academic and extracurricular information in the application that demonstrates your motivation, achievement, leadership, and commitment(link is external)(link is external)t.
to the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP)—the support program for students from low-income families in which neither parent is a college graduate:
- Discuss how the program might benefit you
- Tell us about your determination to succeed even though you may have lacked academic or financial support

additional Information 난을 사용하여 학생의 성과에 대한 이해를 돕고, 수상, 활동, 리더십 요소, 봉사 활동 등을 추가로 나열하며, 교육 환경에 포함되지 않은 비정상적인 상황이나 상황에 대한 정보를 공유할 수 있다.애플리케이션의 다른 영역도 마찬가지다. 마지막으로, 학생의 에세이를 읽은 후, "이 사람에 대해 우리가 알고 있는 것은 무엇인가?"라는 질문을 던질 것이다. 만약 우리가 이 글을 읽고 그래도 학생에 대해 잘 모르겠다는 생각이 든다면 학생이 쓴 대답들은 잘못 한 것이다. <미래교육연구소>
