국내고 학생이 미국 주립대학 '주거주민' 학비로 가기

불수능을 끝내고 가고 싶었던 국내 대학 진학이 어렵다고 판단한 많은 학생들이 미국 대학 등 해외 대학으로 눈을 돌리고 있다. 가장 가고 싶은 곳이 미국 대학이지만 부모들은 "내가 그 비싼 학비를 지원해 줄 수 없다"라고 유학에 반대를 한다.
미래교육연구소는 그동안 '국내 대학보다 더 저렴하게 미국 대학에 가는 방법'을 소개했다. 즉 미국 사립대학에서 학자금 보조(Financial aid)를 받아서 서울대 연고대 학비보다 더 저렴하게 가는 길을 꾸준히 안내를 했다. 그런데 이런 대학들은 어느 정도 내신이 뒷받침되어야 한다. 적어도 3-4 등급, 아무리 못해도 5등급 정도는 되어야 한다. 그 이하 등급을 받은 학생들은 이른바 상위권 혹은 중상위권 미국 대학에 가기는 조금 난망하다. 물론 영어를 잘하면 우회하는 방법이 없는 것은 아니다. 따라서 영어 능력, 즉 토플을 79-80점 이상 받을 수 있다면 5등급이건, 8-9등급이건 문제가 안된다.
그러나 6등급 이하에 영어 토플이나 아이엘츠, 듀오링고 성적이 기준점 이하일 경우 선택을 달리해야 한다. 오늘 소개하려는 대학들이다. 이런 대학들은 국제학생을 유치하기 위해 우선 합격한 국제학생들에게 장학금, 즉 '국제학생 장학금'을 준다. 즉 학생 유치를 위한 장학금이다. 이런 대학에 지원을 해서 합격을 하면 미국 시민권자 그 가운데서도 주 거주민 학비, In state tuition으로 저렴하게 주립대학을 다닐 수 있다.
일부 유학원들은 주립대학에 장학금을 받고 가는 루트로 지원하는 것을 자기들만의 노하우인 것처럼 말한다. 이들은 '미국 주립대학 장학금 받고 가기'라고 홍보를 하지만 그런 유학원들을 통하지 않더라도 얼마든지 미국 주 거주민(In state) 학비로 다닐 수 있다. 앞서 설명을 했지만 그 대학들은 해외 유학생들을 유치하기 위해 '장학금'을 내걸고 모집을 하고 있다.
오늘은 웨스턴 미시간 대학에 대해 소개를 한다.
■ Western Michgan University
오는 2022년 가을에 진학을 하려는 학생들 가운데 입학 장학금 받기를 희망하는 학부 1학년생은 2021년 12월 15일(특별히 명시되지 않은 한) 얼리 액션 마감일까지 입학지원서 파일을 작성해야 하면 된다.
입학 지원서에 학생에 대한 정보 즉, 과외 활동, 명예 및 상, 논술/자기소개서)을 작성하면 이것이 장학금 지원 자격을 결정하는 데 사용되며 선발 과정에 사용된다. 학생은 가급적 합격과 장학금 액수를 극대화하기 위해 지원서를 잘 작성해야 한다. 지원자가 고등학교 성적이 3.60 이상이면 자동적으로 Lee Honors College에 초대될 것이다.
학생들이 받을 수 있는 장학금 종류는 다음과 같다.
▶ Medallion Scholarship Program
Value: Up to $64,000 ($16,000/year for four years)
Consideration Criteria: The Medallion Scholarship is the most prestigious scholarship at WMU. Medallion scholars stand out among their peers. Students are selected through a competitive, holistic review of the admission application file. No additional scholarship application is required. Up to 60 semifinalists will be selected to participate in an interview to select up to 20 Medallion Scholars.

▶ Foundation Scholars
Value: $64,000 ($16,000/year for four years).
Consideration Criteria: 3.70 GPA* at the time of admission and verified, significant financial need

이 장학금 외에도 다음과 같은 장학금을 받을 수 있다. 위에 장학금은 12월 15일까지 신청을 해야 하지만 다음 장학금들은 2월 15일까지 신청을 하면 된다.

Criteria: 3.00+ GPA at the time of admission and at least two of the following criteria: participation in a pre-college/bridge or migrant education program, eligible for participation in the Federal Free or Reduced Price Lunch program, and/or first generation college student.

입학처 장학생 2명에게는 최고 액수의 장학금이 수여된다. 상은 변경될 수 있습니다.
*장학금은 입학 당시 성적에 근거하여 수여된다. GPA 요구 사항은 4.00 척도의 누적 GPA를 기반으로 한다. 따라서 고등학교 성적표가 4.0 스케일이 아닐 경우 다시 GPA가 계산된다.
전체 입학원서 파일에는 지원서(WMU 보충서를 포함한 공통 앱), 고등학교 공식 성적표 및 $40의 지원금 또는 수수료 면제가 포함된다. ACT/SAT 점수를 제출하고 싶은 학생들은 self report를 하면 된다. 항공 비행 과학에 관심이 있는 학생들은 얼리 액션 마감일(12월 15일)까지 입학 원서를 완료해야 한다.
■ 웨스턴 미시간 대학은 어떤 대학인가?
이 대학은 1903년 설립된 주립대학으로 미시간 주 칼라마주에 위치하고 있다.
유에스 뉴스 258위 대학이다. 주립대학 랭킹 126위 대학이다. 이 대학의 가장 유명한 전공은 공학, 컴퓨터, 경영학, 관광학, 항공학과다. 이 가운데서도 항공학과가 가장 유명하다. 5개의 브랜치 캠퍼스를 운영 중이다. 학생수 2만 1000여 명의 대형 주립대학이다.
국제학생 비율은 전체 학생의 9.8%다. 2020년에 1학년으로 총 2613명이 입학을 했다.
