미국의 코로나19 확산세, 휴일 매출 증가

1. 미국의 코로나19 확산세

The omicron variant is spreading rapidly all over the country, but hospitalization and death rates remain relatively low. 

오미크론 변이가 미국 전역으로 급속하게  확산하고 있다. 그러나 입원률과 사망률은 상대적으로 낮은 수준을 유지하고 있다.

The seven-day average of COVID-19 cases topped 280,000 this week. It's a record number of new cases in the country; the last time the number of cases hit a peak close to that was January.

일주일 평균 코로나19 확진자 수는 이번주 28만 명을 넘어섰다. 미국 내 사상 최고의 기록으로, 지난 1월에 이 숫자에 근접한 확진자 수를 기록한 바 있다.

2. 휴일 매출 증가

Mastercard says holiday sales were up 9% from 2020 — the biggest annual gain in 17 years.

마스터카드는 휴일 매출이 2020년보다 9% 증가했다고 말한다. 이는 17년 만에 가장 큰 연간 증가률이다. 

While holiday sales are up from 2020 as expected, economists say what's even more telling is that retail spending exceeded pre-pandemic levels.

경제학자들은 휴일 매출이 2020년보다 증가한 것보다 더 눈 여겨 볼만 한 것은 소매 지출이 코로나19 팬데믹 이전 수준을 상회했다는 점이라고 말한다.

Online shopping also played a huge role in holiday spending, increasing 60% from pre-pandemic levels.

온라인 쇼핑 역시 휴일 지출에 큰 영향을 미쳐서, 코로나19 팬데믹 이전 수준보다 60% 증가했다.
