모기와 바위에게 배우는 기다림의 지혜
인생을 살다 보면 참고 기다려야 하는 경우가 많이 있습니다. 기쁘고 즐거운 기다림도 있지만, 슬프고 괴로운 기다림도 있습니다. 청혼하고 상대의 대답을 기다리는 두근거리는 기다림, 병원에서 환자가 깨어나기를 기다리는 간절한 기다림, 수능시험을 보고 대학교 합격 발표를 기다리는 떨리는 기다림 등 다양한 기다림이 있습니다. 살다 보면, 실패를 경험한 후해 재기를 준비하며 기다려야 하는 때도 있고, 인생의 목표를 달성하기 위해 참고 기다려야 하는 때도 있습니다. 이렇게 다양한 기다림을 우리는 어떤 마음으로 기다려야 할까요?
기다림의 지혜를 모기가 알려줍니다. 여름밤에 모기를 보면서 어떻게 기다려야 하는지를 배웁니다. 새벽에 모기에 물려 잡으려고 하면 잽싸게 도망가 보이지 않습니다. 방에 불을 켜고 모기를 잡으려고 하지만 모기는 쉽게 나타나지 않습니다. 사람과 모기의 한판 전쟁이 시작됩니다. 사람은 피를 빨리고 잠을 설치는 문제이지만, 모기는 자기 목숨이 달린 생존의 문제입니다. 1시간을 기다려도 모기가 꼼짝하지 않고 나타나지 않을 때가 있습니다. 모기도 필사적으로 자기가 생존할 수 있는 시간이 올 때까지 인내하며 기다리고 있는 겁니다. 절대 불평하거나 서두르지 않습니다.
기다림의 지혜를 바위가 알려줍니다. 북한산 둘레길을 산책하다가 커다란 바위를 보면서 배웁니다. 바위는 1년 전에도 그 자리를 지키고 있었고, 10년 전에도, 100년 전에도 그 자리를 지키고 있었습니다. 바위는 수십 년, 수백 년을 묵묵히 견디며 그 자리를 지키고 있습니다. 절대 불평하거나 서두르지 않습니다.
기다림에는 인내심이 필요합니다. 자신의 강점을 최대로 활용할 수 있고, 상황이 유리하게 형성될 때까지 참고 기다릴 줄 알아야 합니다. 그런데 사람은 몇 날 며칠을 기다리는 것도 힘이 듭니다. 이럴 때는 모기와 바위에게 끝까지 버티며 기다리는 인내심을 배워야 합니다. 기회가 자기 앞으로 다가올 때까지 기다려야 합니다. 가장 좋은 기회가 찾아올 때까지 이를 꽉 깨물고 버티며 ‘존버’ 해야 합니다. 이것이 모기와 바위가 알려주는 기다림의 정신입니다. 이것이 성숙하게 인생을 살아가면서 성공할 수 있는 지혜입니다.

With what mindset should we wait for such diverse waits?
A mosquito taught me the wisdom of waiting. I learned how to wait by watching mosquitoes on summer nights. If I am bitten by a mosquito in the early morning and try to catch it, the mosquito quickly runs away and cannot be seen. I try to catch mosquitoes by turning on the lights in the room, but they don't show up easily. A war between humans and mosquitoes begins. For humans, it's a matter of losing blood and losing sleep, but for mosquitoes, it's a matter of survival where one's life depends on it. There are times when the mosquitoes do not move and do not appear even if I wait for an hour. Mosquitoes are also desperately waiting patiently until the time comes when they can survive. Mosquitoes never complain or rush.
The rock taught me the wisdom of waiting. While walking along the Bukhansan Mountain trail, I learned patience while looking at a large rock. The rock was still there a year ago, 10 years ago, and 100 years ago. Rocks remain silently in place for decades or even hundreds of years. Rocks never complain or rush.
Waiting requires patience. We must learn to wait until we can utilize our strengths to the fullest and to wait patiently until the situation is favorable. However, it is difficult for us to wait for several days or even weeks. At times like this, we must learn patience and wait until the end like mosquitoes and rocks. We must wait until the opportunity comes our way. We must persevere until the best opportunity comes. This is the spirit of waiting that mosquitoes and rocks teach us.
