마일즈 데이비스 밴드의 키보디스트로 [In a Silent Way], [Bitches Brew] 등의 앨범에 참여였고 퓨전 재즈 밴드 Return to Forever 리더였던 60-70년대부터 이미 레전드인 칙 코리아. 작년에 신보 [Plays]도 발표했고 공연 소식도 종종 들려 여전히 현역이라 생각했는데 悲報가.
십수 년 전 수요예술무대 녹화장에서 그의 라이브를 본 적이 있다. 운 좋게 사인도 받았다. "오늘 연주하신 Spain 너무 좋았다!" 고 수줍게 말도 건넸는데.. RIP Chick Corea (1941-2021)
I view all music as happening right now. When I play Scarlatti, when I play Monk, when I play Mozart, when I play Stevie Wonder, or when I'm improvising with no theme, It's all right now. Music at this ideal wavelength has no chronological time-past or present. It's all present, very present. The present can get wider. It can become a very big space. Music can then become a gateway to the future.
I feel a close affinity for all the composers on this album. They're like close friends. The music communicates all that's the most worhwhile between us. Each one of these friends of mine fits into the category I consider is my direct tradition. That is: composer, pianist, band leader. So many others that are also my friends-like Harce Silver, Johann Sebastian Bach, Art Tatum, Bela Bartok, Duke Ellington, Igor Stravinsky, Alban Berg, Bud Powell to my inspirational contemporaries Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner and Keith Jarrett-are all my inspirations; some like spiritual mentors.
Solo piano is a continual workshop in life for me; a constant self discovery; an ongoing experiment in communication with my inspirational friends, with audiences and with myself. The selections here are from a few recent concerts.
I consider it an honor to be able to play for you.
