"케이팝 데몬 헌터스" 라는 애니메이션 작품이 인기다. 뉴멕시코주에서도 내가 한국사람이라고 나를 소개하면, 케이팝 데몬 헌터스를 봤다는 피드백이 많더라.

아마도 외국인들에게 한국의 정서에서 이야기하는 혼(魂, spirit/soul)과 넋(魄, shade, ghost)의 개념은 생소할 것이다. 음양의 조화를 우주변화의 원리로 다루는 한민족은, 인간의 구성원리가 혼(양의 기운)과 넋(음의 기운)이 결합된 것임을 알고 있었다. 천기에서 비롯된 혼과 지기에서 비롯된 넋이 조화를 이룬 결정체, 인간은 혼을 통해 비전을 꿈꾸는 창조적인 존재로 산다. 또한 넋이 있어서 인간은 육체를 경험을 삶의 지혜로 나눌 수 있다. 있다. 넋으로 인해 감정과 감각을 느끼는 인간은 다른 존재들과 더불어 산다.

작품에서 귀마는 넋의 에너지를 극대화시켜 인간을 고통으로 고립시킨다. 본래 경험과 감각은 개인적인 존재가 공감을 통해 집단을 이루게 한다. 또한 새로운 문화로 하여금 더 큰 가치를 실현하는 큰 역할을 한다. 그런데 귀마는 인간을 개인적이고 고통스러운 기억 속에 가두어버렸다. 무기력해진 인간의 혼을 흡수하여 인간을 무력화하는 것이 귀마의 전략이다.

헌트릭스는 사람의 혼을 흡수하기 위해 혈안이 된 요괴들을 제거한다. 그들의 목표는 혼문을 여는 것이다. 혼문은 일종의 영적 게이트로 꿈, 비전, 직감, 신령한 힘을 열어 어두운 기억과 자극적인 감각에 사로잡힌 넋의 기운을 중화시키고 인간이 본연의 힘을 자각해 깨어날 수 있는 에너지의 통로다. 노래로 하여금 영적인 통로가 열린다는 설정이 인상적이다.

아이돌의 역할을 그저 인기몰이 하는 딴따라로 여기던 시절을 지나왔다. 지금의 아이돌은 사람들의 혼을 살리는 존재로 묘사된다. 화면에서 노래하고 춤추는 모습을 넘어 그들의 인터뷰나 가치관, 철학이 사람들에게 긍정적인 영향을 주고, 소위 '갓생'의 주인공이자 롤모델로 떠오르고 있다.

아마도 이제 자극적인 가사로 후킹하는 컨텐츠보다는 '혼문'을 여는 컨텐츠로서 대중문화가 사람들에게 다시 인기를 끌게 될 것이다.

Spirit and Soul.

The animation K‑Pop Demon Hunters is really popular these days.

Even in New Mexico, when I introduce myself as Korean, many people tell me they’ve seen it.

For many foreigners, the Korean ideas of “hon (魂, spirit/soul)” and “neok (魄, shade/ghost)” might feel unfamiliar.

But in Korean traditional thought, we believe that the balance of yin and yang is the key to understanding the universe.

Humans, too, are seen as a combination of hon (the yang energy from heaven) and neok (the yin energy from earth).

Hon gives us the ability to dream, imagine, and create.

Neok gives us the ability to feel, sense, and live with others through our body.

Together, they make us complete human beings.

In the show, gwima (귀마) is a demon that takes the energy of neok and twists it.

It traps humans inside their painful memories and emotions.

Normally, feelings and experiences help people connect and build communities and cultures.

But gwima isolates people in their trauma, and then absorbs their hon, making them powerless.

That’s its strategy.

The Huntrix are demon hunters who fight these gwima.

Their mission is not just to destroy the demons, but to open the "Honmun" (혼문)—a spiritual gate.

The Honmun is a doorway to inner power:

It opens vision, dreams, intuition, and divine energy.

It helps balance the confused, heavy emotions of neok and brings humans back to their true strength. The idea that this gate can open through music and singing is really beautiful.
