치밀어 오르는 격정도 있었다. 이상한 소리였다. 너무도 이상해서 그 소리는 이제 나의 귓속에서 비죽이 삐져나오는 환청으로 굳어졌다. 내 귀여운 강아지에게서 짐승의 울부짖음이 뿜어져 나왔다. 그날, 상가 번영회에서 해마다 실시하는 쥐 잡는 날. 쥐약이 든 음식이 시장 곳곳에 구석구석 뿌려졌다. 이모와 나는 <복실이>를 예의주시하며 긴장하고 있었다.
이모는 시장 한복판에서 청과물 가게를 하셨다. 그리고 그 가게 옆에, 이모부가 빈 과일 상자로 듬성듬성 만들어준 복실이 집이 있었다. 진돗개를 아파트에선 키울 수 없었다. 할 수 없이 이모가게에 집을 마련했다. 그리고 밤이 되면, 걸어서 20분 거리에 있는, 마당이 있는 이모 집으로 데려가서 재웠다. 그 개는 어머니가 주신 선물이다. 노르웨이로 시집가기 전, 그녀는 한 움큼의 눈물과 강아지를 주고 가셨다. 그리고 그날, 인적이 끊긴 밤거리를 졸린 눈으로 바라보던 이모는 가게 문을 닫기 위하여 남은 과일들을 정리하셨다. 그리고는 그녀는, 복실이를 묶은 개 줄을 잡고 집으로 갈려다가 멈칫했다. 가게 구석진 곳, 조그마한 평상에 잠들어 있는 나를 기억한 것이다.
그녀가 나를 깨우러 간 사이 개가 사라졌다. 하지만 10분도 지나지 않아 복실이는 돌아왔다. 그런데 이상했다. 엉성한 자기 집으로 쏜살같이 들어가더니 괴성을 지르며 집을 물어뜯기 시작했다. 이모부가 어느새 달려 나와 그의 거친 손으로 내 눈을 꽉 틀어막았다. 소리만 들렸다. 그 소리만 짧게 굵게 짧게 굵게 몇 번 들리더니 이내 잠잠해졌다. 이모는 눈물을 흘리며 내 손을 거칠게 잡고 집으로 끌고 갔다. 이모의 입에서 거친 욕설이 튀어나왔다. 어머니에 대한 욕이었다.
"이런 호양년 같은 것이 얼굴 뺀질뺀질하니 지 이뿌다고 카니 미스코리아 나간다고 돈만 처발라 코 수술에 눈 수술에 처 하면 뭐하노 예선전에서 미끄러진 년이…. 꼬라지 하고는 늙은 유부남한테 빌붙어 아나 처 낳더니……. 낳으면 지가 고이 키우던가…. 늙은 오메한테 처맡기더니 이젠 개새끼까지 처맡기고…. 빙신같은 늙은 양놈 새끼하고 눈이 처맞아 달나뿌면…. 오데 있는 나란지 알아야 가서 맥살이라도 잡아보제…. 우리 칠규 인생이…. 너무 불쌍하다……. 너무…."
나는 그날 처음이자 마지막으로 이모의 분노를 보았다. 그리고 며칠 뒤, 그녀는 예쁜 강아지를 한 마리 내게 보여 주었다. 그러나 나는 받기를 거절했다. 시장에서는 끝까지 키울 자신이 없다고 말했다. 이후 나는 어떤 동물도 가까이하지 않았다. 그리고 어렴풋이 나는 자신을 발견하기 시작했다.
몇 년 뒤, 할머니가 돌아가신 후, 나는 처음으로 서울에 있는 아버지 집으로 보내졌다. 큰 대문을 지나자 푸른 잔디와 멋진 소나무가 어우러진 넓은 정원이 나왔다. 그리고 나는 거기서 네 마리의 복실이를 보았다. 그들은 나를 보더니 요동치며 크게 짖었다. 나는 눈길을 접고 돌아섰다. 울부짖는 환청이 따라다녔다.
