Out of the night that covers me, black as the pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be for my unconquerable soul. Beyond this place of wrath and tears looms but the horror of the shade, and yet the menace of the years finds and shall find me unafraid. It matters not how strait the gate, how charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.

온 세상의 지옥처럼 캄캄하게 나를 엄습하는 밤의 어둠 속에서도 나는 그 어떤 신에게든 감사한다, 내게 굴하지 않는 영혼 주셨음을. 분노와 눈물이 어른거리는 이곳 너머로 죽음의 공포만이 모습을 드러낸다. 그러나 세월의 위협은 지금도 앞으로도, 내 두려워하는 모습을 보지 못하리라. 상관치 않으리라, 저 문이 아무리 좁아도, 내 운명의 두루마리가 형벌로 가득 차 있다 해도 나는 내 운명의 지배자요, 내 영혼의 선장일지니.
