군주와 군중을 구분할 필요 없다, 모든 권력은 사악하다

Oscar Wilde: Allauthority is bad

There is this to be said in favor of the despot, that he, being an individual, may have culture, while the mob, being a monster, has none. One who is an Emperor and King may stoop down to pick up a brush for a painter, but when the democracy stoops down it is merely to throw mud. But there is no necessity to separate the monarch from the mob; all authority is equally bad.

독재자에 관해 우호적으로 말할 수 있는 한 가지는 괴물이나 다름없는 군중은 교양이 전혀 없는 반면, 한 개인으로서 독재자는 교양이 있을 수 있다는 사실이다. 황제나 왕은 화가의 붓을 집어 주기 위해 몸을 굽힐 수 있지만, 민주주의가 몸을 굽힐 때는 단지 진흙을 집어던지기 위해서다. 그러나 사실 군주와 군중을 구분할 필요는 없다. 모든 권력은 똑같이 사악하기 때문이다.
