Selfishness is not living as one wishes to live, it is asking others to live as one wishes to live. Unselfishness recognizes infinite variety of type as a delightful thing, accepts it, acquiesces in it, enjoys it. A red rose is not selfish because it wants to be a red rose. It would be horribly selfish if it wanted all the other flowers in the garden to be both red and roses.

이기주의란 내가 원하는 대로 사는 것이 아니라 타인에게 내가 원하는 방식으로 살라고 요구하는 것이다. 비이기심은 무한히 다양한 유형을 아주 유쾌한 것으로 인식하며 받아들이고 묵인하고 즐긴다. 붉은 장미가 붉은 장미가 되기를 원한다고 해서 이기적인 것은 아니다. 그러나 붉은 장미가 정원의 모든 꽃들이 붉어지고 장미가 되기를 원한다면 그건 지독히 이기적이라 할 수 있다.
