At present, people see fogs, not because there are fogs, but because poets and painters have taught them the mysterious loveliness of such effects. There may have been fogs for centuries in London, I dare say there were. But no one saw them, and so we do not know anything about them. They did not exist till Art had invented them. Before Turner there was no fog in London.

오늘날 사람들이 안개를 바라보는 것은, 안개가 거기 있어서가 아니라 시인과 화가가 그들에게 그 효과의 신비한 매력을 가르쳐 주었기 때문이다. 아마도 런던에는 몇 세기 전부터 안개가 있었을 것이다. 분명 그랬을 것이다. 그러나 아무도 안개의 특징을 찾아내지 못했고, 그 결과 우리는 안개를 제대로 인식하지도 못했다. 예술이 안개를 상상력으로 구현해낼 때까지 안개는 존재하지 않았던 것이다. 터너 이전에는 런던에 안개가 존재하지 않았다.
