In Art, the public accept what has been, because they cannot alter it, not because they appreciate it. Art only begins where imitation ends. In art there is no such thing as a universal truth. A truth in art is hat whose contradictory is also true.

예술에 관한 한 대중은 이미 존재하는 것만 받아들인다. 그것의 진가를 알아봐서가 아니라 그것을 변화시킬 수 없기 때문이다. 예술은 모방이 끝나는 곳에서 비로소 시작된다. 예술에 보편적인 진실 같은 것은 없다. 예술에서는 진실과 정반대되는 것 역시 진실이다.
