안녕하세요? 저는 한국에 사는 유종민이라고 합니다.
현재 경제 전문 케이블 방송인 한국경제TV에 근무하고 있으며, 깨움연구소의 소장이기도 합니다.
Hi, My name is Jong-min Yu, and I am currently working at Korea Business News Co., Ltd. which is a Korean cable television channel specializing in economics. At the same time, I am the president of the Waking Institute.
먼저 이렇게 편지로라도 당신에게 인사하게 되어 반갑게 생각합니다.
저는 올해초 알파고와 이세돌 9단과의 대국을 통해 당신으로부터 많은 영감을 받았습니다.
First, it is good to greet you by this email. I want to tell you that I was very much inspired by you through the google DeepMind challenge Go match “Alpha Go VS Sedol Lee(9dan pro)”.
그리고 한가지 놀라운 사실을 발견하였습니다.
당신에 대해 알고자 많은 서점을 뒤졌지만 당신에 대한 책이 전무하다는 사실입니다.
그나마 언론을 통해 보도된 기사를 통해 알게 되는 것이 고작이었습니다.
So I looked for more information about you and I learned something surprising; I couldn’t find a book written about you. I only found newspaper and internet articles.
당신에 대해 알면 알수록, 당신에 대한 이야기를 저만 안다는 사실이 많이 안타까웠습니다.
특히 13살의 나이에 체스 신동 소리를 들으며, 세계 체스 챔피언 2위까지 올랐던 당신이 게임 개발에 도전하는 모습은 가히 놀라웠습니다.
또 케임브리지 대학에서 컴퓨터과학을, 유니버시티 칼리지 런던에서 뇌과학을 배우면서 컴퓨터와 뇌를 결합한 인공지능을 개발한 대목은 저에게 있어 진정한 혁신을 이루기 위한 길이 무엇인지 스스로 되묻게 만들었습니다.
The more I found about you, the more intrigued I became. The fact that you won 2nd place at world chess championship when you were 13 years old and were proclaimed a wiz kid. The fact that you began to develop computer games and then used what you learned through your computer science studies at Cambridge University and neuroscience studies at University of College, London to improve your AI program. These things made me question the way I thought of how innovation happens.
그런 점에서 세상 사람들이 당신을 단순히 구글 딥마인드의 CEO로만 기억한다는 것은 무척 억울한 일일 것입니다.
왜냐하면 당신은 체스 선수, 게임 개발자, 컴퓨터 과학자, 뇌 과학자, 구글 딥마인드의 CEO 그 무엇 하나로 정의내릴 수 없는 사람이기 때문입니다.
There are so many facets of your story that I think deserve attention by the general public. If you were just known as the creator of Deep Mind, people wouldn’t know about your skill and talent as a chess player, a game developer, a computer scientist or neuroscientist.
그래서 저는 당신에 대한 책을 쓰기에 이르렀습니다.
첫째로 당신에 대한 책이 없었고, 둘째로 당신의 삶을 통해 배운 영감을 많은 사람들이 알기를 원했으며, 셋째로 당신을 단지 알파고를 개발한 CEO가 아닌 ‘혁신의 아이콘’으로서 더 많은 한국 국민들에게 사랑받고 기억되기를 바랬기 때문입니다.
So, completely on my own I began to write a book about you. The reasons of writing about you are, firstly, there is no book about you, secondly, I wanted people to know the inspiration which I have learned from your life, and lastly, I want you to be known and loved as “an icon of innovation” by more Korean people not just as CEO who developed AlphaGo.
어떤 내용에 있어서는 당신의 생각에 반하는 내용도 충분히 많을 거라고 생각됩니다.
만약 책 내용 중에 당신을 불쾌하게 하거나 사실에 반하는 내용이 있었다면 저의 온 마음을 담아 사과 말씀드립니다.
Many parts of the book might not reflect your real ideas. So I apologize to you with all my heart if some part of the book offends you or the book contains incorrect information.
그래서 당신에 대한 책이지만 누구보다 당신에게 보이기가 제일 두려웠습니다.
책에 소개된 당신의 진실은 저도 아닌 오직 당신만이 알 수 있기 때문이죠.
하지만 저는 용기를 내어 당신에게 이 편지와 함께 제 책을 함께 보내기로 결심했습니다.
비록 이 책이 진실과 거리가 먼 내용이 담겨 있다고 하더라도 당신에게 받은 영감과 혁신의 아이디어는 변함이 없기 때문입니다.
Even though this book is about you, you were the person whom i was afraid to show this book the most because it is not me but you who will recognize what the truth which was introduced through this book is. However, I decide to send you this book along with this letter. Even though some information in this book might not be true, I believe that ideas and inspiration I have learned researching on your work are true.
책 내용중에 당신이 수정하거나 추가할 내용이 있다면 언제든 저에게 회신주시기 바랍니다.
그것은 다음에 찍을 재판에서 최대한 반영하겠습니다.
그래서 이 책이 비단 한국 국민 뿐만 아니라 당신의 모국인 영국 국민, 그리고 나아가서는 구글을 아는 전세계인들이 읽기를 고대합니다.
Please let me know by replying what I have to revise or add to the book. I will reflect it in next revision as much as possible. So I wish this book would be read by many people including not only Korean but also your own people which means English and people all around the world who know google as well.
