 When a mystery is too overpowering, one dare not disobey. Absurd as it might seem to me, a thousand miles from any human habitation and in danger of death, I took out of my pocket a sheet of paper and my fountain-pen. But then I remembered how my studies had been concentrated on geography, history, arithmetic, and grammar, and I told the little chap (a little crossly, too) that I did not know how to draw. He answered me:

"That doesn't matter. Draw me a sheep..."

  신비로움이 너무도 강렬할 때 거부할 수 없는 힘에 압도당할 수밖에 없다. 사람들이 있는 마을에서 아주 멀리 떨어져 아무도 거주하지 않는 인적 없는 곳에서 죽음의 위험 속에 있는 것 같을 때 나는 주머니에서 종이와 펜을 꺼냈다. 하지만 내가 그동안 지리와 역사 그리고 산수와 문법을 어떻게 집중해 왔는지 떠올라서 그 아이에게  약간 언짢아하며 어떻게 그림을 그려야 할지 모르겠다고 말했다. 그 애가 내게 대답했다.

  "그런 건 중요치 않아요. 그냥  양 한 마리만 그려주세요."

But I had never drawn a sheep. So I drew for him one of the two pictures I had drawn so often. It was that of the boa constrictor from the outside. And I was astounded to hear the little fellow greet it with,  "No, no, no! I do not want an elephant inside a boa constrictor. A boa constrictor is a very dangerous creature, and an elephant is very cumbersome. Where I live, everything is very small. What I need is a sheep. Draw me a sheep."

So then I made a drawing.   

 그러나 난 한 번도 양을 그려본 적이 없었다. 그래서 순간 내가 그릴 수 있는 두 가지 그림들 중 하나가 생각났다. 그건 코끼리를 삼킨 보아 뱀 그림이었다.  그림을 보여주고 나서  예상을 빗나간 뜻밖에 들은 말이었다.

  "아니 ! 아니 ! 코끼리를 삼킨 보아뱀을 원하는 것은 아니라니까요. 보아 뱀은 아주 위험한 뱀이에요. 게다가 코끼리는 나를  지나치게 성가시게 할 수도 있고.  내가 사는 곳은  모든 게 작아서,  내가 필요하한 건 바로 양이니까, 제발 양 그려주면 돼요."

He looked at it carefully, then he said:

"No. This sheep is already very sickly. Make me another."

So I made another drawing.

  어린왕자는 그려준 양을 조심스럽게 바라보았다. 그리고 나서 말했다. "어이 참. 이 양은 아파 보이는데, 다른 양을 그려줘요. "

 그래서 나는 또 다른 양을 그렸다.

My friend smiled gently and indulgenty.

"You see yourself," he said, "that this is not a sheep. This is a ram. It has horns."

So then I did my drawing over once more.

 녀석은 따스한 미소를 짓더니, "자신을 좀 봐봐요." 이건 양이라기보다 뿔이 달린 숫양이네요."

그래서 나는 이번에도 조용히 그림을 그렸다.

But it was rejected too, just like the others.

"This one is too old. I want a sheep that will live a long time."

By this time my patience was exhausted, because I was in a hurry to start taking my engine apart. So I tossed off this drawing.

  그렇지만 다른 것들처럼 또 다시 퇴짜를 당했다.

  "이 양은 너무 늙어 보여. 전 오래 살 양을 원한다니까."

이제는 엔진 부품들을 허겁지겁 분해를 하느라 분주했기 때문에  나의 인내력은 바닥이 났다. 난 이 그림을 대충 그려 던져 주었다.
