春分 [27] / [33]
She didn’t come back until late at night, and didn’t answer his calls either. He began to worry. At that moment, she came back home, with a big bouquet. Her expression was bright.
“I got a new job,”
she said while giving the bouquet to him.
He forced a smile on impulse, surprised. He didn’t like flowers, not much, especially a bouquet.
“Really? Where?”
he was suspicious, rather than happy.
“It’s an office job in an online-shopping mall for women. I will start working from tomorrow.”
Her attitude was as if there wasn’t any trouble between them this morning.
She continued, “I will build a better life for myself, darling. I’m so sorry, I burdened you. You don’t need to buy me any luxuries any more. I mean it,”
she kissed him with a hug.
From the time she’d start working, her work got busier and busier. The place she worked at ‘Frip,’ was quite a big company. The days in which she came back home late gradually increased. She didn’t even come home consistently, because she often worked overtime at night. He asked her if he could visit her with food when she was overworked, but she always rejected his offer. She was still a junior employee, so worried about how that would look to her superiors. That was the reason.
Truly, she didn’t ask him to buy anything. But he noticed her property added up little by little. He saw beautiful jewelry sets on her dressing table. He thought she got what she wanted by herself. He actually thought like that. He was too innocent.
One night, she said she had to stay late at work, possibly all night, because the company received a large quantity order from abroad, and she needed to make sure everything was processed on time. He bought a few cups of coffee for her and her coworkers to surprise her. He planned to leave right away after giving her the coffee.
But the building was locked. It was almost 9 p.m. He rang the bell, knocked at the entrance door hard, but no answer. She definitely said she and a few coworkers were working. After he stood there for a little while, a suit-attired middle aged man came out of nowhere. He must have come out of the building.
There might be a side door, Alexander thought. He approached hurriedly to the guy to ask about Violet. But he stopped short. He saw Violet coming from the opposite direction. She didn’t see Alexander. She was heading towards that middle aged guy. Alexander instinctively hid himself behind a thick tree. She got into his car very naturally, and the car left. Alexander got into his car, too, and started to follow them.
After 10 minutes, the car stopped in front of a hotel. Alexander saw the guy put an arm around her waist, and enter the hotel. Alexander was under no illusion about what was going on inside the hotel, as he sat inside his car, fuming.
