Summer Drawing Near

X 立夏 [1] / [7]

They took Sarah into custody and questioned her. But Sarah said nothing. Literally nothing. Not even her name. And she didn't show any sign that she even knew Alexander. Her expression was empty, her eyes lost focus. She shut her mouth, exercising her right to remain silent. Even though they arrested the criminal they were longing to bring to justice, there was still a huge problem.

"The evidence to prosecute Sarah for murder is insufficient,"

Cynthia said.

"What? What about me? What about the body of Marcello in her place? What about Lucas?"

"You testified that she tried to stab you with a knife. But we couldn't find any knife, nor cyanide in the house for that matter. Almost right after your testimony we searched the house.

Except the mummy, there was nothing there. So there's only your statement without support.

And it's true we found the dead body in her house. The cause of death is also cyanide.

But there's no evidence there either since we couldn't find the chemical, and we cannot be sure she killed him. We guessed she might have done it of course, but that's all.

As for Lucas, it's been too long since what happened to him took place. There's definitely no evidence of her crime. The documents are not evidence that she committed anything. It's evidence of Lucas' illness back then.”

Alexander was flabbergasted, horrified! How could they let someone like her walk the street? She was not just dangerous. She was downright homicidal. They had to figure something out because, as per law, they could only hold her without an arrest warrant for 48 hours; and sometimes not even that.

He was starting to lose hope, when he received a text message again, from a restricted burner phone; telling him to meet up at a junk yard not far from the office. It wasn't ideal, but it was private.

Alexander wasn't happy about being dragged on by the caller, but he could not refuse those clues from him. He couldn't help going to the place―a junk yard―where the caller ordered him. He went there with his gun alone. He didn't even mention his whereabouts to Cynthia. He didn't want to see her worrying anymore.

She didn’t trust the caller, even though she admitted that he was pretty helpful. She was thinking there might be some misdirection from the caller instead of giving them information.

But according to how things unfolded up until now, it seemed that what the caller wanted wasn't to harm Alexander or any other people related to him. He was actually helpful. Alexander wanted to see how helpful the caller was in the end.

Alexander approached the junk yard. There was nothing catching his attention. A few stray cats glared at him as if he hindered their path. He walked around the yard fruitlessly.

What did the caller want from him? Alexander was almost angry at the caller, and at himself; who was dealing with this case so inefficiently. At that moment, as if to scatter his thoughts, his phone rang. He answered the phone call without a word.
