Alexander would never forget that day as long as he lived, and, though even the gravest wounds heal with time, a scar almost always remains. As Alexander knelt before the heap that was once Cynthia's car, almost as if in penance, he was overwhelmed by the emotional tempest whirling within him. Fear, self-loathing, anger, loss: all co-mingled into a cocktail of utter despair that threatened to consume him, but the dominant emotion in that deadly brew was guilt.
He should've been there for her. He could have saved her. If he weren't so obsessed with Violet's case, with seeing her debasement and downfall, then maybe he would've relented. Maybe the argument would've fizzled out, and she'd still be home with him, snuggling up in bed, making love as the early morning filtered in through the bedroom. Never more would he see her in the flesh. Never again would he feel her touch, or hear her sweet voice calling out to him. He felt alone, he felt scared, and, worst of all, he felt like this was all his fault. He wanted to take it back, he wanted to do it all over again! He wanted this nightmare to end. Lt. Thompson came forward, and helped Alexander to his feet, bracing him as Alexander regained his footing.
"No, no, no . . . " his voice was severely shaken,
"What happened to her?"
He knew the answer was obvious. She was gone. There was nothing left. And Lt. Thompson didn't have to respond. Alexander could see the answer in his eyes.
"Look," Lt. Thompson replied, trying to be careful with his words,
"We're doing everything we can to figure out what happened. But―"
"Is there . . . Is there anything left? In the car?"
Alexander asked, unable to give more detail than that, but Thompson understood.
"Very little. The intensity of the flames,"
his voice trailed away for a moment.
"The heat from the flames after the explosion was exceptionally high, and it burned for quite a long time. There's not much there. We recovered a ring, and a few personal articles from the car, but everything else is pretty much gone."
Lt. Thompson showed Alexander what remained. The charred remains of a cellphone were visible in the box, along with a few articles of what once appeared to be clothing. But it was the ring that caught Alexander's eye. It was her wedding band. Despite a few scratches, it was largely untouched by the flames. As he held it in his hand, the day they were married arose vividly in his memory, and tears ran down his cheeks again.
