"Mr. Gresham?”
It was Lt. Thompson.
"Where is she?”
Alexander asked. His voice was very low. Thompson didn't answer. Alexander observed the scene with a trembling heart. Temporary coverings were erected to obscure the wreckage, which must have been her car, from view. It was impossible to distinguish clearly without a closer look. Lt. Tompson approached him, showing him something on his phone. It was a CCTV video recording.
"You can see that this car had entered this parking lot,"
he explained.
Alexander noticed her car at once. He looked around at the surroundings. The spot where the wreckage is was the exact same spot where her car had been.
"She got out 4 minutes after she parked the car,"
Thompson continued.
Alexander saw her figure. She was rubbing her eyes while she walked away. She looked like she was crying.
"After a few minutes, she came back to her car,”
said Thompson as he pressed the stop button, said.
"Mr. Gresham. I couldn't tell you about this over the phone. I can't even decide whether I should show you this or not,"
he was almost sweating, and kept wiping his forehead.
"What?”
Alexander asked desperately. His voice felt as if all its luster were extinguished. Mr. Thompson thought Alexander's face looked ghostly pale.
"OK,” Thompson swallowed,
"But promise me that you won't . . . "
Thompson stopped speaking. Alexander was staring at him. Thompson inhaled with a deep breath, as if he was an athlete about to begin a match. And he pressed the play button.
Cynthia got in the car again. The headlights were on. And exactly 3 seconds later, there was a huge explosion, and flames burst out from nowhere, devouring the car at once. The furious fire soared higher.
Alexander's sight darkened as if, in that moment, clouds blocked out the sun. He shook his head, and looked at the site, where ash had piled up. He tried to run into the ashes to find her somewhere in there.
Several hands grabbed his body simultaneously, preventing him from entered the wreckage. He thrashed, struggling to release himself from their grasp. His struggle turned into bitter sobbing. People who were holding him gradually released their grip, and he collapsed.
He knelt down on the ground, prostrated. His shoulders heaved as he sobbed. The people beside him lowered their heads quietly. Heavy rain kept striking them continually.
It was nearly sunrise, but it was as if the sun would never rise again for Alexander.
3
Cynthia
“He tried to run into the ashes…”
“His sight darkened as if, in that moment, clouds blocked out the sun.”
Alexander
Sunrise that never comes
“It's time for sunrise, but it's as if the sun would never rise again for Alexander.”
