<Melancoly sorrow>
Following the moon of a lonesome century
Meandering around places known and unknown!
The person's heart,
running out of bed,
bounced out of the blue into the night,
wandering the endless wilderness must be lonely.
Ah- this young man must be sad like the pyramids.
He decided to visit his mother's mausoleum after the day broke. It was a very cold morning.
His mother's remains, as it turned out, were cremated, and entombed in an urn vault located within a cemetery mausoleum in Vermont. He had the address of the cemetery, and it would be a 6-hour drive at least, depending on traffic, but he needed to make peace with the past. He had a lot conflicting emotions running through him at the moment, and even though his mother was now gone, nothing really seemed resolved.
It was as if there was a big, empty space defacing the portrait of his life. If he had any hope of filling in that incomplete mosaic with something that reconciled the past with the present, he had to close this chapter of his life on his own terms and in a way that allowed him to step boldly into the future without being held back.
The mausoleum was on a low hill surrounded by secluded fields of reeds. A man was told Sylvia's name, and he guided Alexander to the location where his mother was laid to rest. He saw dozens of other jars nearby. When he stood in front of her jar, which was kept behind the glass storage closet, his heart sank with a thud.
Sylvia was not alone there. There was another jar beside hers. Shane Davis and Sylvia Davis. She had chosen to use Shane's name.
He could clearly see the picture of his parents. He could tell the guy was his father even though he had never met him. Alexander was the spitting image of his father, who looked much younger than Alexander was now.
There was another picture of Alexander as a little boy-one which he could remember, with his mother holding hands with him and smiling brightly. He looked about 4 years old or so. Therefore, it was probably before all those misfortunes happened to them. That was the only picture attached to the urn. He tried to remember his mother. He couldn't recall her well. He had tried to forget about his family, and had succeeded to some extent. He couldn't remember her shiny face like in that picture.
What he vividly remembered was her exhausted, bitter, depressed expression. That expression was the same even when she saw Alexander playing in the playground. She never smiled, nor laughed despite Alexander's endeavors to make her laugh. Slight parts of that sour memory with her came nearer and nearer to him.
Wasn't I enough reason for you to live on? If father had lived, would this story have been different?
He thought in front of the picture. He shook his head. All this is unnecessary and useless. No matter how he chose to vent his feelings, his parents, being merely ash, couldn't listen.
He left with unresolved feelings, and no promise to return. He got to the car.
It's a 6-hour drive hom, he thought to himself. He rummaged in his suit pocket to find a cigarette before that long drive. He started to smoke more after Cynthia had gone. Something in his pocket snagged on the cigarette pack as he pulled it out. It was the green envelope, his mother's letter.
Following the moon of a lonesome century
Meandering around places known and unknown!
The person's heart, running out of bed...
bounced out of the blue into the night
wandering the endless wilderness must be lonely
Ah- this young man must be sad like pyramids
“He could tell the guy was his father... Alexander was the spitting image of his father.”
“There was another picture of Alexander as a little boy… That was the only picture attached to the urn.”
이로 인해 알렉산더는 일말의 죄책감과 함께 질문을 던짐: "Wasn't I enough reason for you to live on?"
“He tried to forget… and had succeeded to some extent.”
“All this is unnecessary… couldn’t listen.” →
“He didn’t promise to come back again.” →
