He hesitated to read it for a moment. Then, trying to stay calm, he tore the seal, and opened the letter. From the handwriting alone, he was almost on the verge of bursting into tears. Her writing was feeble and tremulous. He could imagine his ill old mother trying to grasp the pen to write the letter, probably the last words she would ever offer her son.

「Even if I tell you sorry a thousand times, I know that would not be enough. I was too weak and vulnerable to protect you in my embrace. When I regained myself, I didn't have capital to support you. When I gained enough property to support you, I lost my courage to find you, meet you and say sorry to you. And it was too late to show myself in front of you. I gained property, but lost confidence to let you see me like this. Although I can leave you all I have, that's not sufficient to express my love towards my son.

Please, remember that I loved you until my last. I struggled with money while I existed in this world and didn't protect what I should have clung to until my last moment. He was lost for words.
