The next morning, he was woken by the mild sunshine of the dawn and chirping sounds from the birds. He went to the hotel restaurant, and grabbed scrambled eggs, cereal, and sausages with milk.
During the meal, he observed people there. Watching people was an old habit he'd picked up from his former line of work. He needed to do that to grasp what kind of person someone was, and to catch the traits that others might not notice. Whenever he did that work, his heart wasn't relaxed at all. It couldn't be. But now he was watching people with a lightened heart. He rather enjoyed the levity.
As it was early morning, and there weren't many people. A family with two little kids, a few couples here and there. A man, who looked like the kid's father, was struggling to make his son eat something, while a woman, probably the mother, laughed as she talked to her little girl. Alexander smiled despite not having any warm memories like in that scene. But who knows? Maybe he too would be a father someday. He was surprised at himself that he could even think of something so positive. He moved his fork to poke at another piece of sausage.
The couple near the entrance seemed to be getting ready to leave today. They had a big trunk, and were arguing. He could tell they were consciously trying to tone their voices down, but the restaurant was quiet enough to convey their conversation to people inside.
"Have you noticed how many times we have to go back home early because of your clients?”
the man asked the woman.
"That is not my fault, Bill. And you knew that I might have to go back to work right away if I'm needed,"
the woman looked angry already. They were silent for a time.
After a while, the man spoke,
"And I have to put up with that all the time."
"And why not this time?"
the woman asked back sharply. The man whose name seemed to be Bill, raised both shoulders.
"I just feel lonely even though I am with you. Whenever you get calls from work, you stop talking to me, wherever we are, no matter how much time we spend."
"And I have to support your writing those silly novels and everything else!"
The woman stood up, hitting the table with her palms. Glass plates and metal forks and knives made a clacking sound and were sent flying by the shock. The woman seemed to be venting her feelings out.
"Do you think I do this because I love it? If you pulled in enough money, I wouldn't have to do this! If I quit this miserable job, do you think you can keep chasing your literary career? How many years has it been, and you still haven't given up? Are those times not enough to realize how impotent you are?"
