The man gaped, staring at the woman who blazed with anger. Everybody in the restaurant was looking at them now.
"All you do is whine about how lonely you are. I'm done with this, it's over!"
then she rushed out of the restaurant, leaving the man alone without her baggage.
The man looked like the last rose of autumn: weathered, beaten-down, out in the cold as winter approaches, and with no hope to escape the biting frost. Alexander cringed.
These people were clearly not happy, and, in a very abrupt way, it brought his mind back to the past. The couple he just saw wasn’t very unfamiliar to him. They reminded Alexander of Cynthia. He had hurt Cynthia because of work, and she died because of the burden placed on her by her duties.
He remembered that he had never been truly happy except the short moment when he got his monthly salary. Alexander couldn’t help agreeing with that woman. If he had had enough money back then, he would not have made Cynthia miserable . . . He should have learned to be happy regardless of work. That might be something Cynthia and his mother both wanted of him. He felt ashamed of himself because he didn’t have the courage to choose better things for his life under the constant pressure of his “economic situation.” Thankfully, once he had the means, he didn’t have to accept misery anymore.
Alexander watched the man, Bill, slowly leave the seat with all his baggage, including the woman’s. A bitter taste seemed to linger in his mouth, despite the food being quite good. He quickly finished his breakfast, ordered a cup of coffee to-go, and left for the beach.
The fresh air made him come back to reality after the flights of fancy he'd felt after meeting Natalie, and the hope―of seeing her again―that kept his spirits high.
He made his way down to the bench near the coast where he sat after she departed. Part of him hoped that she would return to this part of the beach, but another, more sentimental, and, in many ways, more realistic part of him, just wanted to go back to the place that served as a totem channeling the source of his good feelings from the previous night. He sighed, sipped his coffee, and gazed out into the sunset.
He had chosen to come here, a random place on the map, recklessly. Why should he be particularly cautious this time? He could take the bull by the horns again. He could find out about her if he tried. The first way he thought of was to visit the bar and ask the bartender about her. He remembered her talking with the bartender there, and she might even be a regular, so he felt like it was worth a shot. The bar didn't open until early evening, so he waited.
