He kept thinking about trying another way. He could request her contact info from the hotel staff. They might have let him have her number or something. He knew this plan would make him look like a stalker, but he didn't want to just follow her around. He would be frank about how he felt about her, and observe her reaction.
'My next step depends on her,' he told himself. He went back to his hotel to put his thoughts into practice.
He approached the information desk in the lobby.
"Hello, I'm a long-term guest in room 602, I want to know the phone number of the maid who recently quit,"
he didn't beat around the bush.
The crew smiled kindly,
"What could a maid who has already quit do for you, sir?"
Why hadn't he anticipated how they might answer this question?
"I want to ask her something.”
His reply sounded absurd, even to himself, and the receptionist who was listening to him, at least as far as Alexander was concerned, probably thought the exact same thing. But she responded in the same patient tone.
"Do you know her name?"
"Natalie. That's all I know."
The receptionist searched for something on the computer.
"Ah, I found it. Will you tell me the question you want to ask her? I can try to ask her to call to you or convey your message."
"Can you tell her to call me? Here's my number,"
he handed the receptionist a small piece of paper, said thanks to her and left.
Now waiting for her reply was the only thing he could do except roam around the street to try and maybe see her by chance. He thought it might take a while for her to get his message, if she received it at all. But neither were the case. He got a phone call an hour later. His phone rang from an unknown number. He answered it promptly.
"Hello."
"Alexander?”
it wasn't Natalie. It was a man. Alexander's heart began to beat fast.
"This is he. Who's this?"
"The hotel said you wanted to give your number to Natalie,”
this deep voice sounded very gentle and calm.
"Who are you?”
Alexander asked. No matter how calm the voice on the other end seemed, he didn't have a good feeling how this call would go.
"I'm her friend,”
he answered.
What the hell did 'her friend' mean? An actual friend? Boyfriend? He couldn't imagine that her friend would intercept a message meant for her and call on her behalf.

"Okay, so you're her friend. How come I'm talking to you and not her?"
"She's busy. Look," said the man on the other end of the phone.
