The man turned, and walked away, and Natalie stared after him, tears still evidently welled up in her eyes, but otherwise standing strong as this man, who evidently was her boyfriend, left the building and, presumably, her life. Alexander braced himself. 'Was this a good time to approach?' He wondered this to himself. He wanted to go up to her, to talk to her, but he felt weird about it given the scene he'd just witnessed. He was conflicted.
He pulled a light blue cotton handkerchief out of the pocket of his new suit. 'This is for her, not you. Remember that.' The tailor had said this to him, and gave it to him free of charge. He stared at it, and glanced at her, still standing in that very spot where the man left her. She was standing like a statue. Slowly, she crouched down, and buried her head in her knees, as if curling up into a ball.
Judging by her heaving shoulders, she seemed to be crying. He hesitated. He couldn't decide whether it was a good idea to approach her now or not. Thousands of thoughts occurred to him in that short moment. But, he reasoned, if they were truly meant to be, no matter how awkward this might turn out to be, the connection he sensed between them would prevail. He slowly walked onto the rooftop as if he were only there for a smoke. When he got closer to her, he could hear her subdued sobbing. He felt a weird pain in his heart somewhere.
"Excuse me, are you alright?”
He asked her cautiously and gently. Her sobbing stopped. As she lifted her head, he handed the handkerchief to her from behind. She couldn't see him as he was standing behind her. She thanked him quietly and dabbed her eyes with the handkerchief. She stood up and looked at the man next to her.
"You?"
she looked stunned.
"Hi, Natalie,”
he intended to convey surprise, but his emotion betrayed him. Her eyes reddened again.
"I was about to smoke,”
he tried to smile, showing her a cigarette and lighter. She said nothing.
"Are you okay?”
he asked again. She just shook her head and hurriedly covered her eyes with his handkerchief.
"I see. Do you want to walk a little, maybe have some coffee as we go?”
Alexander suggested cautiously. She was still covering more than half of her face.
After awhile, she looked into his eyes again, tried to hold back tears, and said,
"I would like to, but I . . . I just can't. Not today. I'm sorry. I just need some time to think . . . But I will call you, sometime soon. A hot coffee would be nice."
"For sure. I would be happy if you called me. Then can we exchange numbers?”
He already had it, but he wanted her to give it to him freely. She added her number to his phone and he called her so she'd have his number too. He watched her save the number under the name, "Alexander."
