"Each person goes their own way. I'm no figure of authority in her life. It's her decision and it would be nonsense if I tried to intervene just because she is about to leave me.”
He tried to maintain a cool expression. Even though Cynthia didn’t know Kiara very well, she could easily guess that Alexander and Kiara were not very close siblings at a glance. It was more likely that Alexander and Kiara were just so different from one another that even the blood that united them had a repellent force, keeping them apart.
“Then with who can you stay after your discharge? I thought she would take care of you.”
Cynthia didn’t expect the situation to develop this way.
“Don’t worry about me,”
Alexander looked very tired.
“You ought to go get some rest. I’m surrounded by all doctors and nurses. There is no need to worry you about me,”
he said to her.
“Ok, I will let you be. But let me tell you this, you don’t need to be alone. You can stay with me if you need to. I mean, you don't have to feel alone.”
Alexander was confused. She divorced John, but they still worked in the same department. He didn't want John to know that Cynthia cared for him like that. What would John think if he knew?
Like Cynthia was reading his mind, she added in a tender way,
"I'm just saying this as your boss, nothing more or less. So be at ease,"
and she left.
Alexander couldn’t be sure what her real intentions were. What he could be assured of was only this: His only family member left him, perhaps forever, without looking back at the moment when he so desperately needed her. Now, no one was beside him, and Cynthia was the only person who was trying to occupy that space.
