From meaning sth to being sth

쇼디치 근방의 비영리 기관 전시 Raven Row의 Lutz Bacher: AYE! 전시. 이 모래 다 어떻게 치우나 하는 생각.

루츠 바커는 보통 이렇게 공간을 점유하는 작업을 한다고 한다. 게다가 이건 특히 사운드가 중요한 작품이었다. 작품에 대한 Anthony Huberman 의 글 Songs, Spells and Shipwrecks 에서 좋았던 부분들 발췌.

And so we began talking about music – not ‘sound’ as some kind of medium, but song and melody. I mentioned the piano that haunts the soundtrack of What Are You Thinking (2011), floating alongside the sound of rain and soft kisses.

a novel, Orfeo, by Richard Powers, which tells the story of Peter Els, a composer who tries to weave musical patterns into DNA. Unsuccessful, he is left without the answer to his life-long question: how did music trick the body into thinking it had a soul? I imagine Lutz might have underlined that sentence.

a recording of a live performance by Nina Simone playing on the car stereo. The singer is giving a long introduction to her next song, casually sharing her thoughts with the audience, and one of the people in the truck asks, ‘Why is she talking?’ The driver responds, ‘She is preparing to sing.’

In song, a voice can be liberated from language and allowed to remain closer to breath......Song contains a thickness, a weight in the room, that speech doesn’t have..... Words, when merged with melody, become something else, start meaning something else – something other than what they mean by themselves. Or, as they shift towards music, words turn into vibrations and go from meaning something to being or doing something.

Lutz doesn’t seek to diagnose the world around her, much less define or even understand it, but only to tune into it, vibrate with it, and locate its resonant abstractions. Her goal is not to tell a truth or win an argument but to create a mood, an intensity, a temperature, maybe even some kind of music.

전시 공간을 이렇게나 호화롭게 썼네 싶었는데, 또 저 오디오 기종과 위치를 너무 잘 골라서 공간이 허해보이는 건 또 아니라서 센스가 보였다.

기대 안 하고 갔는데 너무 재밌었다. 작가 본인을 묘사한 작품들.

마지막엔 슬슬 조각 작품들이 나오더니

맨 마지막 전시 공간을 점유했던 이 어마 무시한 키네틱 조각.

그라운드 플로어엔 Artists’ Film International (AFI)였는데 지쳐서 영상을 못 봤다.

크루징 유토피아. 석사 공부할 때 읽어라고 추천받았던 책인데.

니콜 아인즈만 도록은 하나 사고 싶었는데 화이트 채플 갤러리 도록이 은근 또 비싸서.

또 다른 재밌어 보이던 책들.

그리고 이건 나 어릴 때 할머니 집에서 읽던 좋아하던 책인데 너무 반가웠다.
