20. 좋은 일만 하고, 잘못을 전혀 저지르지 않는 의인은 이 세상에 하나도 없다.
For [there is] not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.
21. 남들이 하는 말에 마음을 쓰지 말아라. 자칫하다가는, 네 종이 너를 욕하는 것까지 듣게 된다.
Also take no heed unto all words that are spoken; lest thou hear thy servant curse thee:
22. 너 또한 남을 욕한 일이 많다는 것을, 너 스스로 잘 알고 있다.
For oftentimes also thine own heart knoweth that thou thyself likewise hast cursed others.
23. 나는 이 모든 것을 지혜로 시험해 보았다. 내가 "지혜 있는 사람이 되어야지" 하고 결심해 보았지만, 지혜가 나를 멀리하더라.
All this have I proved by wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it [was] far from me.
24. 지혜라는 것이 무엇인지, 너무도 멀고 깊으니, 누가 그것을 알 수 있겠는가?
That which is far off, and exceeding deep, who can find it out?
25. 그래도 나는 한 곳으로만 정신을 쏟아 보았다. 지혜가 무엇인지, 사물의 이치가 어떤 것인지를, 연구하고 조사하고 이해하려고 하였다. 사악이 얼마나 어리석은 일이며, 우매가 얼마나 미친 일인지를 깨닫는 데에 정신을 쏟아 보았다.
I applied mine heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and the reason [of things], and to know the wickedness of folly, even of foolishness [and] madness:
26. 나는 또, 올가미와 같은 여자 마음이 덫과 같고 손이 쇠사슬과 같은 여자는 죽음보다 더 쓰다는 것을 알았다. 하나님을 기쁘게 해 드리는 남자는 그런 여자를 피할 수 있지만, 죄인은 그런 여자에게 걸려들고 말 것이다.
And I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart [is] snares and nets, [and] her hands [as] bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.
27. 보아라, 전도자가 말한다. 내가 깨달은 것은 이것이다. 사물의 이치를 하나하나씩 찾아가는데,
Behold, this have I found, saith the preacher, [counting] one by one, to find out the account:
28. 아직도 얻지 못하였지만, 다만 찾으면서 깨달은 것은 오로지, 천 명 가운데서 남자 하나는 찾을 수 있어도, 천 명 가운데서 여자 하나는 찾지 못한다는 것이다.
Which yet my soul seeketh, but I find not: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found.
29. 그렇다. 다만 내가 깨달은 것은 이것이다. 하나님은 우리 사람을 평범하고 단순하게 만드셨지만, 우리가 우리 자신을 복잡하게 만들어 버렸다는 것이다.
Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.
