사람들은 마음에 사악과 광증을 품고 살다 죽는다

1. 나는 이 모든 것을 마음 속으로 깊이 생각해 보았다. 그리고서 내가 깨달은 것은, 의로운 사람들과 지혜로운 사람들이 하는 일을 하나님이 조종하신다는 것, 그들의 사랑과 미움까지도 하나님이 조종하신다는 것이다. 사람은 아무도 자기 앞에 놓여 있는 일을 알지 못한다.
For all this I considered in my heart even to declare all this, that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, [are] in the hand of God: no man knoweth either love or hatred [by] all [that is] before them.
2. 모두가 같은 운명을 타고 났다. 의인이나 악인이나, 착한 사람이나 나쁜 사람이나, 깨끗한 사람이나 더러운 사람이나, 제사를 드리는 사람이나 드리지 않는 사람이나, 다 같은 운명을 타고 났다. 착한 사람이라고 해서 죄인보다 나을 것이 없고, 맹세한 사람이라고 해서 맹세하기를 두려워하는 사람보다 나을 것이 없다.
All [things come] alike to all: [there is] one event to the righteous, and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean, and to the unclean; to him that sacrificeth, and to him that sacrificeth not: as [is] the good, so [is] the sinner; [and] he that sweareth, as [he] that feareth an oath.
3. 모두가 다 같은 운명을 타고 났다는 것, 이것이 바로 세상에서 벌어지는 모든 잘못된 일 가운데 하나다. 더욱이, 사람들은 마음에 사악과 광증을 품고 살다가 결국에는 죽고 만다.
This [is] an evil among all [things] that are done under the sun, that [there is] one event unto all: yea, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness [is] in their heart while they live, and after that [they go] to the dead.
4. 살아 있는 사람에게는, 누구나 희망이 있다. 비록 개라고 하더라도, 살아 있으면 죽은 사자보다 낫다.
For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion.
5. 살아 있는 사람은, 자기가 죽을 것을 안다. 그러나 죽은 사람은 아무것도 모른다. 죽은 사람에게는 더 이상의 보상이 없다. 사람들은 죽은 이들을 오래 기억하지 않는다.
For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.
6. 죽은 이들에게는 이미 사랑도 미움도 야망도 없다. 세상에서 일어나는 어떠한 일에도, 다시 끼어들 자리가 없다.
Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any [thing] that is done under the sun.
